Comedian Xiao Shenyang, who became famous immediately in China after the 2009 CCTV New Year's Gala, will play the monk's second disciple ZHU Ba Jie.
Xiao Shenyang revealed he was nervous at the very beginning:
"I was afraid of acting no better than the previous incarnations of Monk Pig or ZHU Ba Jie, which many viewers are familiar with. I couldn't decide how I portray the part until after my make up had set. The role of Zhu Ba Jie I portray is lovely and cute."
The first "Monkey King" film grossed 1.06 billion yuan, which amounts to 170.8 million US dollars during the 2014 Spring Festival season.
However some imperfect visual effects and make-up is to blame among a few disadvantages that viewers have pointed out.
Shaun Smith, who's got increasingly famous for the makeup effects for director Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead, is hired as a special effects and make-up supervisor for the new film.
According to the information published on Shaun Smith's own website, he set up a studio in Beijing and managed a team of over 100 international hair and makeup artists to work on Cheang Pou-Soi's version of The Monkey King.
Shaun Smith gives details in particular regarding the process how he and his team made up Xuanzang's third disciple Sandy Monk, known as Sha Seng:
"Sandy Monk, he takes about four hours. There's blue, but there's lot of colors in there, so we layer up colors. The paint job is quite complicated. That actor looks very young, so we take his forehead put some up wrinkles there and try to make him look a little bit older."
The fantasy film will have an all-star cast: William Feng will play saintly Buddhist monk Xuanzang. Megastar Aaron Kwok plays the Monkey King while Gong Li acts the White-Bone Demon.
Hong Kong actor Law Chung-him will play Sandy Monk:
"The Sandy Monk I portray is much stronger than the previous versions. In my acting, I also felt quite worried because my partners are all experienced actors. But as soon as my make up was set, I was inspired and then knew how I should portray the role."
Still being directed by Hong Kong director Cheang Pou-Soi, "The Monkey King 2 in 3D", with the Chinese title which literally translates to "Subdue the White-Bone Demon in Three Rounds" will hit Chinese theaters on Feb. 8.
Whether it will continue to be another box office success? Let us check it out in cinemas during the Spring Festival.
