Ben Ai ("奔爱") or "Run for Love" in English is a Chinese romance anthology film featuring five separate love stories, which are directed by Zhang Yibai, Guan Hu, Zhang Meng, Teng Huatao, and Gao Qunshu respectively.
What additionally arouse the audiences' interest may come from the five Chinese directors having selected different locations for shooting their respective segment, in Japan, the United States, Norway, Turkey and the Pacific island of Saipan.
Director Gao Qunshu shot his part in Saipan. Meanwhile, Gao selected two girls unlike other directors who choose an actor and actress to interpret his own understanding of pursuing love.
Gao Qunshu has given details on the plot of his story in an exclusive interview with us recently:
"My part tells a story about killing a person a girl loves. This is a very extreme love story between two girls. The two girls used to be hostile towards each other. Later, they became intimate in each other's life."
Tong Liya and Zhou Dongyu are the two lead actresses in Gao's story.
At a first-ever press conference that promoted "Run for Love", Zhou Dongyu, who rose to fame after appearing in Zhang Yimou's film Under the Hawthorn Tree, explains her part:
"As the film name 'Run for Love' indicates, my character is a girl who's brave enough to explore and express love regardless of all the adverse conditions."
Though the director has denied it's a lesbian film in the interview, the movie trailer shows Zhou Dongyu and Tong Liya chained to a bed.
Gao Qunshu has received an award for the Best Feature Film for his 2012 film "Beijing Blues", or Shéntàn Hēngtè Zhāng (神探亨特张) at the 49th Golden Horse Awards, one of the Chinese-language film industry's biggest annual events.
Meanwhile, director Zhang Yibai employs 36-year old Zhang Ziyi as the lead actress in his segment. It is reportedly also Zhang's last film before she gave birth to a baby girl in late December. And because of this, Zhang Ziyi was absent at both promotional press conferences.
Last but not the least, Zhang Ziyi's husband, Chinese rock artist Wang Feng has created and sung the theme song "Thanks" for Run for Love, showing his support for her.
