Deadpool might feel pleased with his three-week reign atop the box office, but he never expected that he would be defeated by a bunny and a fox.
Disney's new animation "Zootopia" has topped North American box office in its debut weekend, pulling in around 74 million US dollars, claiming the record of highest ever opening weekend for an animation title.
The stars of "Zootopia" contribute its overwhelming success and rave to its timely theme.
Shakira, who voices Gazelle and has a new song featured in the movie, says its message of diversity and inclusion couldn't come at a better time.
"I love the fact that this movie is about promoting diversity and about avoiding prejudice. And I found that very timely, very appropriate for the moment. I love the social commentary in it. And the many different layers that it has – it's very profound, but at the same time it's so entertaining and lighthearted and the humor in it is fantastic. I think it's a movie that has it all. Really, especially that it makes you laugh from beginning to end."
Setting in a modern mammal metropolis, the film tells the story a rabbit police officer who teams up with a fugitive fox to uncover a conspiracy that involves missing predator civilians.
Ginnifer Goodwin plays the lead role as police officer rabbit Judy Hopps.
"The messages seem extremely timely and it's interesting to think about the fact that it was actually written years ago,which makes you realize that it's actually a timeless message, and what does that say about the human condition that we're still having to say these things to each other today?"
Jason Bateman, who plays the fox Nick Wilde, seems to nod to the US presidential campaign in his praise for the film, directed by Byron Howard.
"I think I love this stuff about watch out for the fear-mongers out there, you know these people just trying to make a power grab by making you afraid of other people is just not bright. So it's fortunate for all of us that that message happens to be so topical and relevant right now. I think it will help drive in the notion that those people shouldn't really be listened to."
"Zootopia" opens March 4 in the US and hits theatres worldwide in the following weeks.
