Definition: Doing good deeds or earning favor in the eyes of another, often one's superior.
Etymology: Marketing practice in post WW2 America. This was whereby stores would give brown stamps to frequent customers. If they gained enough brown stamps they would be given a free gift. It was positive because they were supporting a local business.
2)Lowest common denominator:
-Charlie teased Brian for liking music that is targeted to the lowest common denominator
-Vicky dragged Jordan away from being part of the lowest common denominator, to watch high culture ballet and opera.
-China's foreign movie quota generally only allows blockbusters for the lowest common denominator.
Definition: The most basic, least sophisticated level of taste, sensibility, or opinion among a group of people.
Etymology: Comes from math where the smallest number that is a common denominator of a given set of fractions
3)Smart Alec:
-Morris thinks anyone who can identify the country of origin of wine from a single sniff is a smart Alec.
-The social commentator who tweets on every new trend is kind of a smart Alec
-Jasmine thought her colleague who lectured her on fashion sense was a smart Alec
Definition: A person who is arrogant on technical ability
Etymology: Derived from a man named Alec Hoag. He was a criminal who corrupted cops. But when he didn't pay up, he ended up in jail. The cops then mocked him saying, "Not a smart Alec now are you."
