Iwas a little shocked, hadn’t expected it, and jumped a little.
She did the same thinga second later, smiling.
I smiled.
I tilted myhead left, about to speak, and looksympathetic, and she tilted her head right.
I raised my right hand, she raised her left.
Iput it back by my side, straightened myhead, and she did the same.
“I’ll be yourmirror.”
she said.
Nothing else existed fora second there, I felt calm, and wanted nomore.
Then some chump who had slunkup the corridor goes “Awww, that is socute!”
I barged past her and slammed thedoor, shot the lock across, the handle felloff.
This can’t actually have happened.
She isonly 28.
Only.
What are we doing with ourlives?
Why are we carrying on like this?
Forfuck’s sake, why don’t we grow up?
Pretending we are hip, throwing ourbodies around the room, around the town, projected on cheap MDMA and ciders withice, our shadows are long.
They slip overthe horizon, grow thinner, and disappearas only the all-encompassing shadow ofnight takes over.
That is greater than anyof us.
Then morning comes, and it goesaway.
It peels the film from eyes, sparkscells into action, and eventually resurrectsthose who have avoided it.
