"Exactly--seem foolish-like; and that's very bad for the poor things that be so, though I only guess as much, to be sure," said Grandfer Cantle, still strenuously preserving a sensible bearing and mien.

"Ah, well, I was at church that day," said Fairway, "which was a very curious thing to happen."

"If 'twasn't my name's Simple," said the Grandfer emphatically. "I an't been there to-year; and now the winter is a-coming on I won't say I shall."
“要不是百年不遇，那你们就叫俺傻瓜好啦，”阚特大爷使着劲儿说。“俺今年一年，压根儿就连一回教堂也没去过，这时候冬天来了，俺更不去了。”
"I ha'n't been these three years," said Humphrey; "for I'm so dead sleepy of a Sunday; and 'tis so terrible far to get there; and when you do get there 'tis such a mortal poor chance that you'll be chose for up above, when so many bain't, that I bide at home and don't go at all."
“俺有三年没迈教堂的门坎儿了，”赫飞说。“俺一到礼拜就困得迷迷糊糊的；道儿又远的不得了；就是你去啦，上天堂也是难上难。因为许多许多人都上不去么，所以俺干脆就老在家里待着，永远不去。”
"I not only happened to be there," said Fairway, with a fresh collection of emphasis, "but I was sitting in the same pew as Mis'ess Yeobright. And though you may not see it as such, it fairly made my blood run cold to hear her. Yes, it is a curious thing; but it made my blood run cold, for I was close at her elbow."
“那天俺不但在教堂里，”费韦重新使着劲儿说，“俺还和姚伯太太坐在一条长椅子上哪。俺当时听见她一开口，俺就觉得身上一飕飕的，你们也许觉得不至于那样。不错，是有些古怪；可是俺当时可又真觉得身上一飕飕的来着。因为俺紧靠着姚伯太太么。”
The speaker looked round upon the bystanders, now drawing closer to hear him, with his lips gathered tighter than ever in the rigorousness of his descriptive moderation.
这位讲话的人，因为要使劲表示他并非言过其实，所以把嘴闭得比先更紧，同时把四围听话的人看了一遍；那时那些闲人，靠得更拢了，来听他的故事。
"'Tis a serious job to h@ve things happen to 'ee there," said a woman behind.
“在那种地方上，只要一出事儿，就不会小啦，”站在后面一个女人说。
"'Ye are to declare it,' was the parson's words," Fairway continued. "And then up stood a woman at my side--a-touching of me.
“牧师说：‘你们要当众说出来，’”费韦接着说。“牧师刚把这句话说完了，跟着就有一个女人，在俺旁边站起来了，差不多都碰到俺身上了。
