Point Of Departure 057
On Air 06/03/2019
A little more than 2 years ago when I first started volunteering at WTJU, one of the very initial programs I hosted was on Horace Tapscott and his Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra. Barely had I ever set foot in the city of Los Angeles in my life, I found however, there to be an impulse or almost instinct that pushing me to recognize these faces and places by spreading their music as far as I could. Today the enthusiasm for 'Spiritual Jazz' is at all time high and many of the Tapscott's titles are in print again. My only wish, is this not to be another example of hip vinylized greediness but instead a serious and sincere look back on one of the most important west coast musicians or dare I say in the entire history of jazz. Tapscott had taught me more than any institution ever did, and I continue to benefit from his tunes and words day by day. I couldn't think of a better time than tonight for another episode of Point Of Departure that wholly focused on Tapscott and the Ark, John Carter, Bobby Bradford, Vinny Golia, and many other legendary innovators. Plus, this set is exceedingly enhanced with a brand new Horace Tapscott / P.A.P.A. CD - Why Don't You Listen? - recorded in 1998 as Tapscott's last ever concert at full strength and brought flawlessly this past month by Bertrand Gastaut and his label Dark Tree Records. Please join me in celebrating this grand occasion of Tapscott's legacy and listening, to the SOUNDS OF TRUTH!!!!!!!!
