Chinese premier eyes stronger consular protection for overseas citizens
Premier Li Keqiang says China will set up a global emergency call center as part of an effort to strengthen consular protection of Chinese nationals living abroad.
During a discussion with representatives of Chinese companies in Angola, the premier said it is the government's responsibility to put in place concrete measures to better protect Chinese companies and people overseas.
Angola is the third leg of Li Keqiang's first trip to Africa since taking office.
He has already visited Ethiopia and Nigeria and will next go to Kenya.
E China city suspends water supply over suspected pollution
Authorities in an eastern China city say water supply is expected to resume later today after being suspended amid fears of contamination.
The water company in Jingjiang, a city of 68,000 people, detected a strange odor in the Yangtze River water source this morning.
Samples of the water have been sent for testing.
The news has prompted residents to rush to supermarkets for bottled water.
A string of water pollution incidents has aroused serious concern across China.
A major contamination occurred last month in Lanzhou, capital of Gansu Province, when excessive levels of benzene were detected in the city's tap water.
China's human H5N6 infection an individual case
The Chinese health authority says a human H5N6 virus infection reported earlier this week was an individual case.
The male patient died in Sichuan province, in what appears to be the first known human infection of the virus.
A health official says people who had close contact with the patient have shown no symptoms, and experts found that the risk of human infection is low.
Russia marks Victory Day with massive parade
Thousands of Russian troops have marched on Moscow's Red Square in the annual Victory Day parade, amid the escalating tensions over Ukraine.
President Vladimir Putin made no reference to the situation in Ukraine when he opened Friday's parade, focusing on the historic importance of the victory over Nazi Germany.
About 11,000 troops proudly marched across Red Square.
Some 150 military vehicles and about 70 combat aircraft also took part in the show.
Thai police fire teargas at protesters
Police in Thailand have fired teargas at anti-government protesters trying force their way into a police compound in Bangkok.
Hundreds of protesters have massed outside the compound housing a government security group.
The protests came two days after a court ousted prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra.
But her party's caretaker government remains in place and says it is working towards a July 20 election.
The protesters want the government out and the political system reformed.
Meanwhile, government supporters plan to protest in Bangkok on Saturday.
South Sudan leader sets off for talks with rival
South Sudan President Salva Kiir is heading for the Ethiopian capital to hold direct talks with rebel leader Riek Machar.
It will be the first face-to-face talks between the two since violence began in December after Kiir accused sacked deputy Machar of plotting a coup.
Machar has already arrived in Addis Ababa.
The two sides signed a peace deal in January but it failed to bring an end to the violence which has left thousands dead and more than one million homeless.
Syria's last chemical weapons 'inaccessible': UN
A UN official says fighting between rebel groups and government forces is blocking the removal of Syria's last chemical weapons.
The 16 containers of dangerous chemical agents are located close to Damascus, in an area being fought over by both sides.
Danish and Norwegian ships are waiting to transport the containers from a nearby port to a U.S. vessel for destruction.
Last month it was revealed that almost all of Syria's declared chemical weapons had been removed ahead of the June 30 deadline.
At least one dead as tremor strikes southern Pakistan
At least one person has been killed and 70 others wounded after a moderate earthquake rattled several towns in southern Pakistan before dawn on Friday.
The magnitude 5 quake struck about 400 kilometres northeast of Karachi, around 4am local time when many still slept.
Officials say at least 25 mud-brick homes collapsed in the quake-hit district.
Some of those injured are listed in critical condition.
13 killed as train rams jeep in N. India
Thirteen people have been killed after a train crashed into a jeep at an unmanned railroad crossing in northern India.
The jeep was carrying 16 people returning from a wedding party in Uttar Pradesh state.
Three others were injured, one of them seriously.
Berlusconi to begin community service for tax fraud
Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is due to start a year of community service at a care home near Milan.
He was sentenced to four years in prison for tax fraud last year, commuted to four hours work a week with elderly dementia patients.
Berlusconi is said to have been studying Alzheimer's disease in preparation for his community service.
The billionaire has been embroiled in a string of court cases.
