Thai military leader summons politicians
Thailand's military leader has summoned more than 100 key political figures to a meeting in Bangkok, a day after announcing a military takeover of power.
Ousted leader Yingluck Shinawatra, the acting prime minister and his government, and protest leaders were among those summoned.
Reports say Yingluck has reported in to the army.
On Thursday, the military suspended the constitution, banned gatherings and detained politicians, saying order was needed after months of turmoil.
Army chief Prayuth Chan-Ocha has appointed himself the new prime minister.
Mortar attack 'kills 20' at Assad gathering in Syria
Reports from Syria say a mortar attack has hit an election rally in support of President Bashar al-Assad in the south, killing at least 20 people.
The president was not at the event in the city of Deraa.
State media have confirmed the attack while activists say at least 30 people have been injured.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Rebels trying to overthrow Assad frequently fire mortars into Syria's major cities.
Syrians are due to vote on June 3 in the presidential election.
Gunfight near Indian consulate in Afghan city ends, 4 gunmen killed: official
Afghan officials say at least four gunmen have been killed in an attack on the Indian consulate in the western city of Herat.
The gunmen opened fire with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades in the attack.
Two Afghan policemen were injured during the clash.
The Indian foreign ministry said all of its personnel were safe.
It is not yet clear who is behind the attack.
Leader of militant group killed in Egypt's Sinai
Egyptian security officials say the leader of a militant group has been shot dead in the Sinai peninsula.
Shadi el-Menei was the head of Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, an al-Qaeda-inspired group.
It has claimed responsibility for a number of deadly terrorist attacks over the past few months.
The deaths of more than 200 Egyptian soldiers and officials have been blamed on Ansar Beit al-Maqdis since President Mohammed Morsi was ousted in July 2013.
Congo warlord gets 12 years in jail
The International Criminal Court has sentenced a former Congolese militia leader to 12 years in prison for aiding and abetting war crimes.
Germain Katanga was found guilty in March, only the second person to be convicted by the court.
He was behind the 2003 massacre of hundreds of villagers in the north-east of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The fighting escalated into an inter-ethnic conflict that is estimated to have killed 50,000 people.
Suspected Abu Sayyaf kidnap 2 Chinese nationals in S. Philippines
Suspected members of terrorist group Abu Sayyaf have kidnapped a Chinese businesswoman and her daughter in the southern Philippines.
Police say the pair were snatched from their karaoke bar in Isabela City in Basilan province.
Witnesses said about 10 heavily-armed men went inside the bar and took away the victims on a pump boat.
Security forces have launched a search operation to locate the suspects, said to have headed to Malamawi Island.
Urumqi customs tighten checks on weapons smuggling
Security checks have been tightened at entry ports in Xinjiang's capital Urumqi to curb weapons smuggling.
The move follows Thursday's terrorist attack at an open market that has left 31 dead and more than 90 injured.
The far west Chinese region covers an area of some 1.7 million square kilometers, with borders running for over 5,600 kilometers.
Its geographical position and complex surrounding environment have posed challenges to the region's control of weapons smuggling.
Mining tycoon sentenced to death
A Chinese court has given the death sentence for former mining tycoon Liu Han for organizing a criminal gang and intentional homicide.
His brother, Li Wei, was also sentenced to death.
The verdicts were given following the first trials of 36 members of an allegedly mafia-like gang led by the older Liu.
The Sichuan-based gang were the largest criminal group of its kind on trial in China in recent years.
7 missing after tourist bus falls into water
Seven people are missing after a tour bus fell into a river in east China's Fujian Province.
The bus was carrying a group of 24 tourists from Taiwan when the accident happened.
Officials in Hua'an county have confirmed that all the missing are from Taiwan.
Rescue work is continuing.
6 killed in south China landslide
Six people have been killed and another injured in a rain-triggered landslide in south China's Guangdong Province.
The landslide hit a village in Heping County.
Heavy rain has been battering the province in recent days.
A landslide also killed two residents in Huaiji County earlier this week.
China's first environmental court inaugurated
A special court for environmental cases has been opened in east China's Fujian Province, the country's first such specialized judiciary organ.
The court has recruited 12 environmental, agricultural, marine and mineral experts as technical consultants.
Last month, Fujian was approved as a demonstration zone to explore and pilot judicial protection of the environment.
