-China to help 100 mln settle in cities by 2020 China plans to help about 100 million people without urban ID records to settle in towns and cities by 2020. The State Council, China's cabinet, issued a statement on Wednesday. The circular was aimed at accelerating reform of the nation's household registration, or "hukou," system. The document said the government will remove the limits on hukou registration in townships and small cities, relax restrictions in medium-sized cities, and set qualifications for registration in big cities. -20 people killed in Gaza school shelter by Israeli artillery At least 20 Palestinians have been killed and dozens injured when Israeli artillery fire hit a school in the northern Gaza Strip town of Jabaliya. The United Nations-run school was used as a shelter by displaced people. Israel has not commented on the incident so far. Last Friday, the Israeli army struck a shelter at a UN-run school in the northern Gaza Strip, killing 16 people. -Over 150 feared trapped in India's landslide Over 150 people are feared trapped under debris in a landslide that came down today in a village near Pune (pu-nay) city in the western Indian state of Maharashtra. The flood-stricken village is said to be remote and poorly connected. More than 150 people are feared to have been trapped when a massive section of a hill came crashing down on the village. A Pune District Magistrate told a news channel that at least 45 houses have been buried in the landslide. He also said there is fear of more landslides in nearby villages. Two National Disaster Response Force teams comprising of over 100 members have rushed to the site and the rescue operation is ongoing. -21 killed in road mishap in northern India At least 21 people have been killed in a bus crash in northern India. 15 others have been injured. Local police say the bus plunged 1000 feet into a gorge on Tuesday night. Among the dead there are 10 women and 2 children. Officials have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident. Road crashes in India are responsible for thousands of deaths each year. -U.S. Secretary of State to arrive in India for official visit U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry will arrive in India Wednesday evening on a three-day official visit. Apart from co-chairing the fifth annual India-U.S. Strategic Dialogue with Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in the national capital Thursday, Kerry will meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit. This would be the first high-level interaction between India and the United States since the new Indian government led by Modi came to power after the general elections in May. Kerry's visit is also intended to set the groundwork for a meeting between Modi and U. S. President Barack Obama in Washington in September. -Philippine gov't hopes to resume talks with rebels The Philippine government is expressing hope that peace talks with rebels in the south of the country can resume. A spokesman for the president commented on the stalled peace process after the leftist group New People's Army released four policemen it had been holding captive. The hope is that the National Democratic Front, the negotiating arm of the Communist Party of the Philippines, will now return to the bargaining table. The 4,000-strong New People's Army, armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines has been waging a guerrilla war in 60 Philippine provinces since 1969. -Deep global cut in CO2 emissions will save Pacific Ocean: Palau president The president of Palau has told other leaders of Pacific island nations that the only long-term solution to ocean warming, sea-level rise, and ocean acidification is a deep cut in global CO2 emissions. Tommy Remengesau made the comment at the Pacific Island Forum, which his nation is hosting. He says the Pacific Ocean is under seige, and he warned against failing to recognize climate change and participate in an essential global response to the issue. Remengesau said Pacific island countries are among the smallest on the planet, but they have long been viewed as the conscience of the world. -Ford recalls SUVs in China US automaker Ford has issued a recall affecting more than 25-thousand SUVs sold in China. The issue involves a small clip that may not have been seated properly during manufactor. In some cases, even though the SUV's gearbox has been placed in "park," vehicles without the handbrake also engaged have rolled away. The recall involves imported Edge sport utility vehicles with 2.0L engines, manufactored between September 2010 and November of 2013, and Edge SUVs with the 3.5L engine manufactored on November 5th, 2013. The recall takes effect on August 25th, with Ford China examining the SUVs involved and fixing problems related to the recall free of charge.
