Massive rescue under way after Yunnan quake
Premier Li Keqiang has arrived at the epicenter of the quake-struck area in southwest China's Yunnan Province to direct rescue work.
Rescuers are racing against time to save lives after the 6.5-magnitude earthquake killed at least 381 people and injured 1,800 others.
But the rescue work has been hampered by continuous downpours, which have disrupted traffic, lowered temperatures in the remote area, and made food and medicine shortages even more dangerous.
Thundershowers and downpours are expected in Ludian County, one of the most worst-hit regions, over the next four days, and temperatures could drop to 17 degree celsuis at night.
Death toll of factory blast in E. China rises to 75/xinhua
A senior official in charge of work safety in China says a "very serious dereliction of duty" is to blame for the deadly explosion at a factory in Jiangsu Province.
The explosion happened on Saturday. As of Monday morning the death toll has risen to 75.
185 others have been injured. The factory is located in Kunshan City.
Oil refinery fire contained in NW China
A fire at a PetroChina oil refinery in Lanzhou, capital of northwest China's Gansu Province, has been contained without casualties.
The fire was triggered by a leakage from a fractional distillation device in the refinery Monday morning.
It was brought under control after the propylene source was cut off.
The local environmental authority says no air or water contamination from the fire has been detected.
Chinese foreign minister meets Arab League chief
The top Chinese diplomat is calling the UN Security Council to find a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Foreign Minister Wang Yi made the remark while meeting with the Arab League Secretary General, Nabil el-Araby in Cairo.
El-Araby said Israel was not respecting international law given the proof that nearly two thousand civilians were killed in Gaza.
Wang Yi also sat down with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi in talking about bilteral relations.
Chinese media looks forward to 4G era
Chinese key broadcasting media organizations have gathered in Lanzhou, northwest Gansu Province to discuss the future media development with 4G.
The themes of the forum include the impact and change 4G brings to social life, reform and renovation of broadcasting media in the new communication era. Also the practice and innovation of inclusive development for the broadcasting industry.
In the opening speech, President of China Radio International Wang Gengnian says new media has become a key part of mass communication, with the development of information technology. China Radio International has seized the opportunity of this new round of technology reform, exploring the way of merging traditional media and new media, and constructing a new media group with various forms, advanced means and strong competitiveness.
The one-day forum also invites top mobile operators like China mobile.
Israel starts ceasefire as truce talks under way
The Israeli military has launched a seven-hour ceasefire Monday in parts of the Gaza Strip, as Palestinian and Egyptian delegations are meeting in Cairo for a more durable truce.
The temporary ceasefire aims to facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid and for displaced Palestinians to return to their homes.
However, Isarel says the truce does not apply to areas east of the southern Gaza town of Rafah.
Israel also warns that should the truce be violated, the army will fire back.
So far, the Palestinian death toll has exceeded 1,800, most of whom were civilians. The Israeli side has confirmed the death of 64 Israeli soldiers and three civilians.
Meeting on Palestine starts in Tehran
An emergency meeting on Palestine at foreign ministerial level has opened in Tehran, Iran.
The one-day meeting is aimed at focusing on the Gaza crisis and the ways for dispatching humanitarian supplies to the people of the besieged coastal enclave.
13 countries including Palestine, Algeria, Egypt, Senegal, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Bangladesh, India, Colombia and Cuba, are participating in the meeting.
Delegates from other countries have also been invited.
Russia starts major air force drill
Russia has started a week-long military drill involving bombers and fighter jets with the purpose of improving coordination between its aviation and air defense systems.
Russian air force says the training is conducted "for the first time on the territory of three military districts," namely the western, central and southern military districts.
As clashes kept raging in eastern Ukraine, Russia has been trading blames with major Western powers over issues concerning the beefing up of its military presence near its borders with Ukraine.
Rescue efforts underway after Bangladeshi ferry capsizes
A search operation is underway after a ferry carrying some 200 passengers sank on Monday in the middle of a river in Bangladesh's central Munshiganj district.
Local police say a rescue vessel has been called in to boost local efforts to salvage the ferry.
Many passengers were able to swim ashore after the accident, but the exact number of missing passengers could not be immediately verified.
The cause of the accident was not immediately clear.
