Chief justice warns against judicial misconduct
China's Chief justice Zhou Qiang is warning against misconduct by judges and pledged to improve regulation of judicial acts.
Zhou, president of the Supreme People's Court, made the warning while delivering a report at the bimonthly session of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress.
He added some judges do not exercise discretionary power appropriately, leading to substantive or procedural injustice. Some court trials are not standard, with hearings that don't open on time or judges who behave incorrectly.
He also noted that some judges are disrespectful and even bend the law for selfish ends, severely damaging judicial credibility.
Promote cross-Strait ties through rule of law: spokeswoman
The Chinese mainland's Taiwan affairs office says it will promote the peaceful development of relations across the Taiwan Strait through the rule of law
A spokeswoman says the mainland will improve laws and regulations involving Taiwan affairs, standardize and guarantee ties between compatriots across the Strait, and promote cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation in accordance with the law.
She adds the mainland will use legal means to guard the one-China principle, oppose "Taiwan independence," enhance commitment to the one-China framework, and promote the motherland's peaceful reunification.
Russia launches first Soyuz-2.1a rocket
A Russian space rocket carrying a resupply ship launched today and has been placed in a transitional orbit.
Six hours after the lift-off, the cargo ship is to dock with the International Space Station.
This is the first launch of the new Soyuz carrier rocket.
Earlier Wednesday, a U.S. carrier rocket driven by a Ukrainian engine exploded immediately over the launching pad in the state of Virginia.
The Antares was supposed to deliver cargo to the ISS's U.S. segment.
Currently, there are six people aboard the ISS, including three Russians, two Americans and one European.
Iran rejects UN human rights report as "unfair"/xinhua
Officials in Iran have rejected a recent UN report on the country's human rights record, calling it unfair and politically motivated.
State media says the report ignores realities in the Islamic republic and echoes the political whims of "certain countries."
The report says executions have increased and the conditions of women have worsened in Iran. Officials in Tehran call the findings "repetitious and futile."
The report was delivered to the UN General Assembly on Monday.
Xinjiang publishes anti-terror brochures/xinhua
Authorities in Xinjiang have published a brochure advising the public on how to deal with terrorism.
Using text and illustrations, it instructs people on how to react in the event of an explosion or arson, as well as incidents involving guns, axes, and vehicles.
According to regional authorities, the number of terror-related gangs busted in Xinjiang has increased from about 140 in 2010 to more than 200 last year.
In the latest incident, 40 attackers, six civilians, two policemen, and two auxiliary policemen were killed on September 26th after a series of explosions hit a shop, an open fair, and two police stations in Luntai County.
Online media staff to gain press credentials in China/xinhua
Chinese authorities have announced that press credentials will be granted to staff at news websites, giving reporting rights to online media for the first time.
Previously, online news services have only been allowed to edit and publish stories taken from traditional media.
The training and vetting of online journalists will be handled by the Cyberspace Administration of China.
Credentials for online journalists are to be equal with those of traditional press and broadcast outlets.
The new edict does not cover news producers of so-called "self media" sites, referring to the subscription-based accounts that have become popular on many mobile messaging platforms in China.

Volkswagen recalls Audi cars in China over air bag issue
Volkswagen's Chinese joint venture FAW-Volkswagen will recall over 270 thousand Audis in China due to an air bag software issue.
A spokesman at Audi China says the airbags were from a German supplier.
The Audi recall comes less than two weeks after Volkswagen called back more than 580 thousand Sagitar vehicles in China, to fix a possible suspension defect.
Lucas Podolski to make acting debut
German footballer Lucas Podolski is to star in a comedy film called "Macho Man".
Podolski has already filmed his scenes in the film, most of which took place in a stadium.
The story is set in Podolski's hometown Cologne. It is about the love life of a shy character and his relationship with a Turkish woman.
The film is set for release in October next year.
Podolski is currently playing for England's Arsenal.
He won the FIFA World Cup as part of the German team in July.
