A Chinese official says China hopes APEC will play a coordinating role in establishing the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific.
Wang Shouwen, assistant minister of commerce, made the remarks at a press conference on Tuesday.
He says China hopes concerned parties will strengthen research on the FTAAP and build negotiation capacity to lay a foundation for the eventual integration of the Asia-Pacific region.
He reiterated China's stance of opposing trade protectionism in all its forms.
China is APEC host this year. A series of APEC meetings bearing the theme "Shaping the Future through Asia-Pacific Partnership" will be held from Wednesday to next Tuesday in Beijing.
bjh-hourly 2pm: Over 1.8 million HK citizens sign against Occupy Central
The anti-Occupy group Alliance for Peace and Democracy has collected more than 1.8 million signatures from Hong Kong citizens opposing the protests.
Representatives of the Alliance submitted the unprecedented petition against the Occupy movement to Hong Kong's Chief Secretary Carrie Lam at the Hong Kong government's headquarters on Monday night.
Lam says the Hong Kong government will not let the Occupy Central movement drag on, and will examine the situation and take action to resolve the problem at the right time.
The nine-day signature collection started on Oct. 25 and ended on Nov. 2. More than 1.3 million signatures were collected on the streets, with the rest coming from online.

A shipwreck discovered in the Yellow Sea may be one of the four warships of the Chinese Beiyang Fleet, sunk by the Japanese navy during the first Sino-Japanese war 120 years ago.
The vessel is 10 nautical miles southwest of the Port of Dandong. Its 50 meter hull is still intact but the inside of the ship is badly damaged.
No decision has been made on whether to salvage the vessel. The exact identity of the shipwreck has yet to be confirmed.
Historic records say that Captain Deng Shichang refused to leave the Zhiyuan despite it burning and sinking. He is remembered as a model of patriotism by the Chinese.
The four ships of the Beiyang Fleet were the most modern vessels of the Qing Court, bigger than their Japanese counterparts, but lacking ammunition. They were sunk during the Battle of the Yellow Sea on September 17th, 1894.

Light haze is expected to shroud parts of northern China, while rain will be hitting the country's southwest over the next three days.
The National Meteorological Center says the central and southern parts of northern China will see light to moderate smog in some areas, as unfavorable weather conditions spread.
The smog will ease on Wednesday due to a cold front.
And the cold front will sweep parts of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, north and northeast China, as well as areas along the Yellow and Huaihe rivers on Wednesday and Thursday. Temperatures will drop by up to 8 to 10 degrees Celsius.

The Saudi Interior Ministry has announced that six individuals have been arrested in connection with late Monday's deadly shooting, in which five people were killed and nine others injured.
An Interior Ministry spokesperson referred to the case as a terrorist attack and likened it to other terrorist incidents in Riyadh, Ahsa and the Eastern Region.
He confirmed the arrest of the six suspects.
The shooting occurred in Al-Ahsa Governorate in the Eastern Province, one of the main centers of the Shiite minority in Sunni-ruled Saudi Arabia. The victims were all Shiite Muslims.

Israel has decided to open border crossings with the Gaza Strip as of today, lifting a two-day closure it had imposed on the Palestinian enclave.
On Sunday, Israel shut down Erez and Kerem Shalom crossings for pedestrians and goods.
Israel said Sunday's closure was aimed at sending a message to the Palestinians.
However, a senior Hamas official says the closure was "a clear violation" of the cease-fire agreement.

The World Bank has announced plans for an epidemic emergency fund to fight Ebola and future outbreaks of disease.
The Agency's president says the World Bank is working on the fund in conjunction with the International Monetary Fund, the United Nations, and other multilevel developing banks.
Jim Yong Kim says the scheme is similar to insurance, with many billions of dollars available but only in the event of an epidemic.
The fund, which would borrow money from global markets at very low rates, could finance the global epidemic response effort, including teams from all over the world, allowing for the quick control of the epidemic.
Last week, the World Bank announced an additional 100 million dollars in aid for the three countries in West Africa worst-hit by the current Ebola outbreak.

Saudi Arabia has raised its crude export price for the first time in five months.
State-controlled Saudi Aramco said the price for crude exports bound for Asian markets will be rasied by 9 cents per barrel, effective immediately.
The move comes amid a landslide fall of global oil prices in recent months.
Analysts had expected Saudi oil giants to cut down export prices in face of fierce competition from other oil-producing countries.
