100 feared dead after boat sinking in CAR Nearly 100 people are missing and feared drowned after a boat caught fire and sank in a river in the Central African Republic. It's being reported the incident took place Monday after the boat's motor exploded. The subsequent fire forced the roughly 100 passangers to jump into the river. The boat was about 125-kilometers from the capital, Bangui, when the accident took place. Man arrested and accused of plotting to attack US Capitol The US Federal Bureau of Investiation has arrested a man in Ohio for allegedly planning to attack the US Capitol in Washington. 20-year-old Christopher Cornell has been charged with attempting to kill US officers and employees. Cornell is also accused of voicing support for the Islamic State militant group. He has been arrested after purchasing guns. The FBI says it's had Cornell under surveilance by an undercover agent. State officials in Mexico investigated over cover up in army killings Twenty state officials in Mexico are being investigated in connection with a case involving murder and torture by Mexican soldiers. The officials are being looked at in connection with a case in June, when soldiers were ordered to arrest a gang in a raid. It was later revealed the military murdered at least a dozen of the gang members after they had surrendered. The officials are being investigated for allegedly covering up the murders, as well as ignoring the torture and sexual threatening of at least two of three women who survived the June raid. 7 killed in U.S. drone strike in Pakistan At least seven people have been killed in a U.S. drone strike in Pakistan's northwestern tribal region. It's being reported the unmanned aircraft fired two missiles at a house thought to be a militant hideout in North Waziristan. This is the restive region of northwest Pakistan which the US has long-complained is a refuge for fighters who cross the border and launch raids into neighboring Afghanistan. It's unclear at this point who the targets in the house were. This is the 2nd US drone strike in Pakistan so far this year. U.S. frees 5 Guantanamo prisoners The US defence department says 5 men from Yemen have been released from Guantanamo Bay. This is the latest move by US President Barack Obama to try to close the military prison. The Pentagon says one of the former detainees has been sent to Estonia. The four others have been sent to Oman. With their departure, there are now 122 detainees left at Guantanamo. Twenty-eight of the Guantanamo detainees were released last year. Obama campaigned in his first election to shut down Guantanamo. The US military base in southeastern Cuba was converted to hold terror suspects captured in the wake of 9/11 attacks. Suspect caught after E. China bus fire A 53-year old man is in custody after allegedly setting both a public bus and his former work-place on fire in Fujian this morning. Authorities in the city of Xiamen say the suspect set the bus on fire during the morning rush-hour. At least one person suffered burns, while several others have been hospitalized after the driver of the bus was forced to slam on the brakes when the fire broke out. The extent of the injuries hasn't been made clear. The same man is accused of setting the building of his former employer on fire earlier in the day. No one was hurt in that blaze. China reports over 100,000 new HIV/AIDS infections in 2014 Chinese health officials say some 100-thousand new HIV/AIDS infections have been reported in 2014, up some 15 percent from the previous year. The vice-chief of the National Health and Family Planning Commission says sexual transmission has become the main source of the infection. Infections among elderly people and young students are on the rise. The Commission is calling for stronger virus monitoring at the country's blood collection stations in a bid to reduce mother-to-child transmissions this year. China smartphone maker Xiaomi releases new model Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi is moving upmarket, taking aim at Apple's iPhone with the release of its Xiaomi Note. The new phone has a 5.7-inch screen smartphone. It retails for 23-hundred yuan, or around 370 U.S. dollars. Xiaomi's chair says the new Xiaomi Note is comparable to Apple's iPhone 6, but thinner and lighter. Xiaomi was founded some five years ago. It's first smartphone debuted in August, 2011. Switzerland eliminates cap on purchases of the Franc The Swiss Franc has risen by alsmot 30 percent against the euro after Switzerland's central bank shocked the global market by doing away with a cap it had put in place on the purchase of its currency. The Swiss central bank says its making the move to eliminate the cap, it says while the value of the currency is still high, overvaluation has decreased as a whole. The value of the Swiss Franc began to skyrocket during the height of the euro crisis in 2011, as the country's currency was considered a safe-haven for investors looking to get away from the euro, while at the same time, keep their money in Europe.
