At least one killed, 14 injured in coal mine explosion in E. Ukraine At least one person has been killed and 14 others injured in an explosion in a mine in eastern Ukraine. There are many conflicting reports as to the number of miners who remain trapped underground. According to the Emergency Ministry of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, more than 70 miners are trapped. The Ukrainian Independent Union of Miners says there were more than 200 people working at the site at the time of the explosion and that 47 miners are missing. There are also reports quoting a local official who says more than 30 people have been killed. China to raise defense budget by around 10 pct A spokesperson from China's top legislature says China will raise its defense budget by around 10 percent this year, compared with 12.2 percent last year. Speaking at a press conference a day ahead of the annual session of the National People's Congress, Fu Ying said the exact figure will be published in a budget report Thursday. China's defense budget is riding a multi-year run of double-digit increases. A growth rate of about 10 percent would be the lowest in five years. Fu says as a big country, China needs an army that can safeguard its national security and people. Agricultural trade center fire kills 9 in SW China Nine people have been killed in a fire at an agricultural trade centre in southwest China. Local fire officials in Yunnan province say the tragedy happened early this morning. The fire spread through three two-story buildings in the center, located in the provincial capital, Kunming. Three people who were injured in the fire were rushed to hospital, but officials say all of them have been released already. The trade centre includes more than 200 stores. Food safety public's top concern for annual political sessions: poll A survey has found that food safety has become the public's top concern. According to the poll published by China Youth Daily on Wednesday, about 80 percent of respondents say the issue of food safety is the most important quality of life issue to focus on during the annual two sessions of China's top legislative body and top national advisory body. Commodity and housing prices, medical care, pensions, air quality and traffic jams were also among the most-discussed issues, according to the survey, which sampled nearly 2,200 people. Some 60 percent of those polled say that the country's anti-corruption drive is their top concern among political and economic issues. Other hot topics include environmental protection, the legal system, family-planning policy, and urbanization reform. Decision on HK universal suffrage "unshakable": NPC spokeswoman A spokeswoman for China's top legislature says the decisions made regarding universal suffrage in Hong Kong are "unshakeable." China's Shaolin Temple to build complex in Australia China's Shaolin Temple will build a complex in Australia that will include a temple, a kung fu academy and a hotel. Shoalhaven City Council, of a municipality some 200 km south of Sydney, says that the developer Shaolin Temple Foundation Australia has finalized a land purchase in the local area. It also says that the complex would be a boom for tourism and employment. Shoalhaven Mayor Joanna Gash says that the council and state government have both approved the concept plan for the project. Netanyahu warns US against Iran Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is suggesting the current negotiations connected to Iran's nuclear program are going to pave the way for Tehran to create nuclear weapons, rather than block them.
