Never Too Old to Find Happiness
爱情不老
Reporter: Here are two of the most remarkable people I’ve come across—a 90-year-old man and his wife of two plus years, smart and funny and full of adventure.
Lou Howard admits, when his wife died a couple of years ago, there was a big hole in his life.
Lou: I’d been married for 62 years to my childhood sweetheart.
Reporter: It didn’t take Lou long to realize he needed someone in his life. And at his gym, Ottawa’s RA Centre, he set his sights on Hyacinthe Wade, who lost her husband about a decade ago.
Hyacinthe: I was a hard sell.
Reporter: Love at first sight? Not even close.
Lou: It was a long campaign. She had no interest at all in getting married.
Reporter: Lou has faced some tough challenges before. He served in the navy during the Second World War, barely survived the Battle of the Atlantic.
Lou: The navy made a man of me.
Reporter: Giving up now wasn’t an option, Lou figured, even though the road to a woman’s heart was littered with roadblocks.
Hyacinthe: I was having quite a good life, thanks. And I knew that some old men could be a real royal pain, and I didn’t want to get one of those.
Reporter: Eventually they worked out together, and dined and went to plays together…
Lou: I was a knuckle-dragging engineer, and she brought culture into my life.
Reporter: …and the roadblocks began to disappear...
Hyacinthe: I love life, and he does too, and that’s part of it.
Reporter: …and Lou knew he’d found the second love of his life.
Lou: As we got stronger and stronger in our relationship, I realized, (a) she had her own teeth, (b) she had a car—it was fully paid for-- and a driver’s license, (3) she had a fully paid up condominium at the Riviera. I hit the jackpot.
Reporter: Two years ago Lou and Hyacinthe were married.
Lou: I’d been on tough projects… but this, when I decided to just start this project to win her heart, it was like climbing Mount Filimaiaro, I mean it, without any crampons or oxygen.
Reporter: He doesn’t look it, but Lou just turned 90. His advice to the lonely hearts of the world of all ages--- join a gym.
Lou: I was lonely. I’d found the love of my life right here.
Reporter: As Lou discovered, you’re never too old to find happiness.
Host: And so how did they spend Valentine’s Day? At the gym, of course.
