Merry Christmas. And welcome back to our radio show. This is Cristina from the team Only for the Top One of New Oriental School.
So how did you spend your Christmas? I bet you’ve already known a lot about this foreign festival. Hence, what we are going to do today is to learn more foreign festivals, which are somehow a little bit odd, yet interesting.
The first one is Groundhog Day. Groundhog is a kind of small animal with reddish brown fur and looks like a rat; also we could call it a woodchuck. Groundhog Day is a day celebrated on February 2nd. According to folklore of the US, on that day, the groundhog emerges from its hole to predict whether spring will be coming soon. If it sees its shadow, there will be six more weeks for winter; if not, spring will come early.
And the second one is baby jumping festival. It is not about letting babies jump or something like that, it’s much more dangerous. Baby jumping is a traditional Spanish holiday dating back to 1620. Men dressed as the devil and jumped over babies born during the previous twelve months of the year who lie on mattresses in the street. It is said this festival is to ensure the babies safe passage through life and guard against illness and evil spirits.
The last one is rather interesting. Tomato ooz, or we just call it tomato battle day. People from all over the world gather together on the last Wednesday in August every year in the eastern Spanish town of Bunol to fight with tomatoes. This is so interesting. Can’t wait to have a try.
And also we have opened our radio community so that our fans can post anything that you want to express.
We are here every single day just for you. So much for today, see ya.
