Good evening, everyone. This is Kelly from the English show presented by Only for the Top one. Before the end of first day of April. I’d like to share some music with you guys here tonight. And the song you can hear now is American Pie from Don Mclean. We enjoyed his famous song Starry Starry Night a couple of months ago.
The song American Pie was released in 1971 and was a number-one US hit for four weeks in 1972. It is said that Don Mclean had been asked that what American Pie means. But he said :Sorry to leave you all on your own like this but long ago I realized that songwriters should make their statements and move on, maintaining a dignified silence.
Even though McLean has generally avoided responding to direct questions about the song lyrics, the most popular and most likely interpretation of this song is that it’s a dedication to his idol in music career who died in an accident. Let’s take a look at it.
A long long time ago I can still remember
How that music used to make me smile
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And maybe they'd be happy for a while
It is said that Don Mclean heard the sad news from the paper he delivered when he worked as a newspaper boy. We can see that part from the lyrics too.
But February made me shiver
with every paper I'd deliver
Bad news on the doorstep
I couldn't take one more step
I can't remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride
But something touched me deep inside
The day the music died
I don’t think we need any further explanations for the part.
And let’s just take this song as one to all the people that are gone.
This is Kelly. See you next time and good night.
