headed 与heading的辨析
通常两者用意相同,前述两句话都相当于“Where are you off to?”或“Where
are you going?”此时可通用,但缘起却不一样。
首先,及物动词head有设定航向的意思,如“The pilot heads the plane due west”,过去分词可作形容词,为其比喻义。
其二,不及物动词head有向某方向前进的意思,为其动词本义。这种情况下,headed更口语化,同时美国人的使用频率远高于英国人。
但有时两者有着微妙差别。Headed强调目的地,是时间点或状态概念,既可以指现在也可以指将来,有被动意味,如“I'm headed over there”不能确定是否已经开始行动,只能理解为“我得去那边”。而heading强调方向,是过程概念,有正在进行或即将进行之意,有主动意味,如“I'm heading over there”根据不同语境可有两种含义——“我正往那赶”或者“我马上就去”。
