真正的高贵

风平浪静的大海，
每个人都是领航员。
但是，
只有阳光而无阴影，
只有欢乐而无痛苦，
那就不是人生。
以最幸福的人的生活为例—
它是一团纠缠在一起的麻线。
痛苦与幸福交替出现，
使得我们一会悲伤一会高兴。
甚至死亡本身都使得生命更加可爱。
在人生的清醒时刻，
在悲伤与失落的阴影之下，
人们与真实的自我最为接近。
在生活和事业的种种事务之中，
性格比才智更能指导我们，
心灵比头脑更能引导我们，
而由判断获得的克制、耐心和教养
比天分更能让我们受益。
我一向认为，
开始在内心生活得更为严肃的人，
他的外在生活也会变得更为简朴。
在奢华浪费的年代，
我希望能向世界表明：
人类真正需要的东西其实微乎其微。
悔恨自己的过错，
且力求不再重蹈覆辙，
这才是真正的悔悟。
优于别人并不高贵。
真正的高贵是优于过去的自已。

真正的高贵
In a calm sea every man is a pilot.
风平浪静的大海，每个人都是领航员。
But all sunshine without shade,
但是，只有阳光而无阴影，
all pleasure without pain,
只有欢乐而无痛苦，
is not life at all.
那就不是人生。
Take the lot of the happiest—
以最幸福的人的生活为例—
it is a tangled yarn.
它是一团纠缠在一起的麻线。
Bereavements and blessings, one following another,
痛苦与幸福交替出现，
make us sad and blessed by turns.
使得我们一会悲伤一会高兴。
Even death itself makes life more loving.

Men come closest to their true selves in the sober moments of life,
在人生清醒的时刻，人们与真实的自我最为接近。
under the shadows of sorrow and loss.
在悲伤与失落的阴影之下。
In the affairs of life or of business,
在生活和事业的种种事务之中，
it is not intellect that tells so much as character,
性格比才智更能指导我们，
not brains so much as heart,
心灵比头脑更能引导我们，
not genius so much as self-control, patience, and discipline, regulated by judgment.

I have always believed that the man who has begun to live more seriously within

In an age of extravagance and waste,

There is nothing noble in being superior to some other man.
