“폐하…, 허락하신다면 여쭈어보고 싶은 게 있는데요...”
어린 왕자가 왕에게 말했어요.
“짐은 그대에게 질문하기를 명하노라.”
왕은 서둘러 말했어요.
“폐하… 폐하께선 무얼 다스리시나요?”
“모든 것을.”
왕은 아주 간단하게 대답했어요.
“모든 것이라뇨?”
왕은 조심스럽게 그의 별과 다른 모든 별들과 그리고 떠돌이별들을 가리켰어요.
他对国王说：“陛下……请原谅，我想问您……”
国王急忙抢着说道：“我命令你问我。”
“陛下……你统治什么呢？”
国王非常简单明了地说：“我统治一切。”
“一切？”
国王轻轻地用手指着他的行星和其他的行星，以及所有的星星。
“저걸 전부요?”
어린 왕자가 물었어요.
“전부…”
그는 절대군주였을 뿐만 아니라 우주의 군주였던 거예요.
“별들도 폐하께 복종하나요?”
“물론이로다. 별들은 즉시 복종하느니라. 짐은 규율을 어기는 것을 용서치 아니하노라.”
왕이 말했어요.
小王子说：“统治这一切？”
“统治这一切。”
原来他不仅是一个绝对的君主，而且是整个宇宙的君主。
“那么，星星都服从您吗？”
“那当然！”国王对他说，“它们立即就得服从。我是不允许无纪律的。”
어린 왕자는 그런 권력에 감탄했어요. ‘내게 그런 권력이 있다면 얼마나 좋을까. 의자를 끌어당길 필요도 없이 하루에 마흔네 번이 아니라 일흔두 버느 아니 백 번이라도, 아니 이백 번이라도 석양을 구경할 수 있을 텐데!” 그러자 두고 온 작은 별이 떠올라서 어린 왕자는 조금 슬퍼졌어요. 그래서 용기를 내어 왕에게 부탁을 했어요.
这样的权力使小王子惊叹不已。如果掌握了这样的权力，那么，他一天就不 只是看到四十三次日落，而可以看到七十二次，甚至一百次，或是二百次日落， 也不必要去挪动椅子了！由于他想起了他那被遗弃的小星球，心里有点难过，他 大胆地向国王提出了一个请求：
“저는 해지는 것을 보고 싶어요. 저에게 관용을 배풀어주세요. 해가 지도록 명령해주세요.”
“짐은 만일 어느 장군에게 나비처럼 이 꽃 저 꽃으로 날아다니 라든지, 아니면 비극을 한 편 쓰라든지, 바다새로 변하라고 명령했을 때 그 장군이 내 명령을 수행하지 못했다면 짐과 장군 둘 중 누구의 잘못인가?”
“我想看日落，请求您……命令太阳落山吧……”
国王说道：“如果我命令一个将军象一只蝴蝶那样从这朵花飞到那朵花，或 者命令他写作一个悲剧剧本或者变一只海鸟，而如果这位将军接到命令不执行的 话，那么，是他不对还是我不对呢？”
“폐하의 잘못이에요.”
어린 왕자는 단호하게 대답했어요.
“맞도다. 누구에게나 그가 할 수 있는 것을 요구해야만 하느니라. 권위란 우선 이성에 근거를 두는 법이니라. 마일 그대가 그대의 백성들에게 바다에 빠지라고 명령한다면 백성들은 혁명을 일으킬 것이니라. 짐의 명령이 온당하기 때문에 짐은 복종을 요구할 권리가 있는 것이로다.”
“那当然是您的不对。”小王子肯定地回答。
“一点也不错，”国王接着说，“向每个人提出的要求应该是他们所能做到 的。权威首先应该建立在理性的基础上。如果命令你的老百姓去投海，他们非起 来革命不可。我的命令是合理的，所以我有权要别人服从。”
“그럼 제가 부탁한 석양은요?”
한번 질문하면 절대로 잊어버리지 않는 어린 왕자는 다시 물었어요.
“그대는 석양을 보게 될 것이니라. 짐이 그럿을 요구하겠노라. 하지만 짐이 통치관에 따라 조건이 마련될 때까지 기다릴 것이니라.”
“언제 그렇게 될까요?”
어린 왕자는 다시 물었어요.
왕은 우선 커다란 달력을 들추며 대답했어요.
“그것은 ... 오늘 저녁... 그것은 오늘 저녁 일곱 시 사십 분 경이 될 것이니라! 그러면 그대는 짐이 내린 명령이 얼마나 잘 이행되는지 알게 것이니라.”
“那么我提出的日落呢？”小王子一旦提出一个问题，他是不会忘记这个问 题的。
“日落么，你会看到的。我一定要太阳落山，不过按照我的统治科学，我得 等到条件成熟的时候。”
小王子问道：“这要等到什么时候呢？”

"Sire-- over what do you rule?"
"Over everything," said the king, with magnificent simplicity.
"Over everything?"
The king made a gesture, which took in his planet, the other planets, and all the stars.
"Over all that?" asked the little prince.
"Over all that," the king answered.
For his rule was not only absolute: it was also universal.
"And the stars obey you?"
"Certainly they do," the king said. "They obey instantly. I do not permit insubordination."
Such power was a thing for the little prince to marvel at. If he had been master of such complete authority, he would have been able to watch the sunset, not forty-four times in one day, but seventy-two, or even a hundred, or even two hundred times, without ever having to move his chair. And because he felt a bit sad as he remembered his little planet which he had forsaken, he plucked up his courage to ask the king a favor:
"I should like to see a sunset… do me that kindness… Order the sun to set…"
"If I ordered a general to fly from one flower to another like a butterfly, or to write a tragic drama, or to change himself into a sea bird, and if the general did not carry out the order that he had received, which one of us would be in the wrong?" the king demanded. "The general, or myself?"
"You," said the little prince firmly.
"Exactly. One much require from each one the duty which each one can perform," the king went on. "Accepted authority rests first of all on reason. If you ordered your people to go and throw themselves into the sea, they would rise up in revolution. I have the right to require obedience because my orders are reasonable."
"Then my sunset?" the little prince reminded him: for he never forgot a question once he had asked it.
"You shall ha一ve your sunset. I shall command it. But, according to my science of government, I shall wait until conditions are favorable."
"When will that be?" inquired the little prince.
"Hum! Hum!" replied the king; and before saying anything else he consulted a bulky almanac. "Hum! Hum! That will be about-- about-- that will be this evening about twenty minutes to eight. And you will see how well I am obeyed."
