And even the father never stopped practicing the basics. "He would play scales," the son says. "Here's a guy who's already one of the best trumpet players in the country, and what's he doing? He's not playing some lengthy new tune that he wants to learn. He's playing the scales. Hour after hour, day after day. He would play these different scales. He would say to me that if he knew the scales and he could play them quickly, he could learn any song there was."
