Adage of My Shabby Hut
The worth of a mountain lies not in its height,
but in the gods that lend to its name.
The merit of the river lies not in its depth,
But in the dragon who nestles inside.
And so though you might see a shabby hut,
In my virtue lies its true value.
Moss creeps greenly up the steps,
The jade glow of grass pierces the curtain.
I converse with the most knowledgeable intellectuals,
The incurious are not to be found.
I play my unadorned Qin to entertain myself,
and read the Buddhist sutra at my leisure,
With no frivolous music to distract me,
No government paperwork to tire me out.
As is ZhuGeLiang's hut in NanYang,
As is ZiYun's pavilion in the West of Shu.
By the wisdom of Confucius,
Where is the shabbiness to be found?
