B: Hello everyone, this is the Amazing ones. We invite amazing people to share amazing things with us. I am Bramble, and today our guest is Pepe, welcome~
P: Hello I’m Pepe. It’s a great pleasure to be here with you. Thanks for inviting.
B: Pepe, have you heard that the milk tea girl has been with child? Since she is at almost the same with us, it takes me long time to digest this piece of news.
P: Yes, it’s definitely a buzzing news, and there are lots of controversies. Actually the controversies about milk tea girl never stop since her photo was put to the internet and become the focus of public attention. Her personal affairs have also become the topics to chat among a lot of netizens.
B: And I remembered that there was various rumors about her such like her admission to Tsinghua University is with inside story and she flunked several subjects in university, which all have been proved untrue later. After she fell in love with Liu Qiangdong, speculations and rumors turn up more frequently, such like 30 million breaking-up fee and betrayal reports.
P: It seems like she has no privacy any more since she become famous. And no matter what she did, there were more and more people tend to throw viciousness to her. People spared no effort to abuse a girl with the dirty, malicious and offensive words. The commends below Microblogs about her are much more in aggressive way rather than kind manner.
B: Yes, as far as I am concerned, milk tea girl has received some verbal and psychological attack which she, as a 22-year-old girl, should not suffer. Early in this year she posted a microblog to responds the breaking-up rumors, claiming that she has been enduring the rumors for many years, and was upset to realize that her tolerance results in only more rumors and attacks. It appears that no matter what she did is wrong, even she did nothing at all, it’s still wrong.
P: Actually, I am sympathized with her. For she was exposed to public without her personal willingness. The personal choices she made are judged by thousands of strangers.
B:I can’t agree more. I suppose her marriage with Liu Qiangdong is her personal choice, she is fully aware of what this successful business man, the learned senior can bring to her, and what she will sacrifice for this kind of life. Every have equal right to make them choice without external pressure. I appreciate milk tea girl’s courage.
P: Yes, it’s just like the saying goes : follow your own course and let people talk. You know what, the controversy towards milk tea girl reminds me of a TED talk delivered by Monica Lewinsky I came across a few month ago. The TED talk is tilted as The Price of Shame, aimed at to make people aware of cyberbulling.
B: Wait a minute, Monica Lewinsky is the girl in Petticoat Affair with Clinton, the former president of USA, right?
P: Exactly. She had lost all her reputation overnight in her 22 because of the world-shaking scandal. This scandal was brought her to people all over the world by the digital revolution. That meant we could access all the information we wanted. A click reverberated around the world. She went from being a completely private figure to a publicly humiliated one worldwide. When this happened to her 17 years ago, there was no name for it. Now we call it cyberbullying and online harassment.
B: Oh, I get your point! You mean that the milk tea girl and Lewinsky are both the victims of cyberbullying. And with the increase use of technology and electronic devices, cyberbullying is become increasingly common among us, every on may be the perpetrator without realizing it, and every one can be the victim.
P: Yes, and this problem is especially acute among teenagers. Since they are emotionally fluctuated and unable to realize what they behaviors will bring to others. Analyses shown that cyberbullying was leading to suicidal ideations more significantly than offline bullying. Have you heard about the suicide of Tyler Clementi?
B: Uhm.. I guess no. Is he another poor victim of cyber bulling?
P: Although I am not willing to admit but, yes. He was secretly webcammed by his roommate while being intimate with another boy. When the online world learned of this incident, the ridicule and cyberbullying ignited. A few das later, Tyler jumped from the George Washington Bridge to his death, he was only 18. This rush to judgment, enabled by technology, led to mobs of virtual stone throwers.
B: I am sorry for Tyler’s incident, and in the mean time, a bit angry to his roommate and the mob. It seems that people are obsessed to judging and criticizing others. At the moment they publish their criticism, they are bursted with the sense of self-achievement. Maybe that is human nature, but in my opinion we should all behave ourselves to be nice to others in such a digital era.
P: I agree that some people are just inherently cruel. Some people write very harsh things to famous people or their classmate or colleague, or just even strangers, without even thinking about the fact that they are people.
B: Maybe the fundamental problem lies in relationships among people nowadays, the way we interact with others and the way we express ourselves are shaped by society structure and advanced technology. The online problem is rooted offline. Do you think there is any solutions?
P: Since people are connected in society through various relationships. The cyberbullying issue is troublesome to be solved. But we should try to control it. From my perspective, measures can be taken out as follow. First of all, the laws and regulations should be legislated as soon as possible to protect the victims and punish crimes. The related organizations can play a great role in improving the situation. As for us, we need to take the responsibility to make some changes, helping the internet to be a harmonious world.
B: Yes, each individual can make a change. I would think twice before I talk about others privacy or do some negative commends in future.
P:That’s right.
B: Now it’s time to say goodbye to our audience. Thanks to Pepe’s attendance. Goodbye and wish everyone an amazing life~ (P/B: Bye~)
