Before 600 B.C. Mayans and Aztecs in Mesoamerica had started to drink cocoa, and mix it with peppers. They also used cocoa as an offering to the gods, then developed some ceremonial and medicine uses of it. When European found America continent, the found cocoa, using it as currency and as a drink.
It is the European who make cocoa sweet! The Spanish bring cocoa to home, adopted it as beverage, but invent a new recipe, adding sugar to it. After being spread to other countries, this sweet drink became popular beverage at Europe royal courts. The nobility and the aristocracy adore hot chocolate a lot.
Milk had sometimes been used as an addition to chocolate beverages since the mid-17th century, but in 1875 Daniel Peter invented milk chocolate by mixing a powdered milk developed by Henri Nestlé with the liquor, which today is the world's best selling chocolate drink powder.
The history of the chocolate bar starts much later that that of the chocolate drink. In 1847, the moulding of the first tablet in England gives birth to plain chocolate. The recipe of Nestle make it the milk chocolate we eat nowadays. Since then, various recipe of chocolate rises, and brands develops.
