The Amazing Ones 20161030 Host: Nas Guest: Elsa Topic: To Reveal the Mystery of Tibet Outline of the Program 1. Opening N:Hello everyone, welcome to The Amazing Ones. We invite amazing people to share amazing things with us. Hope you find the joy in our program! I’m Nas.Today, we invite a special guest . E: Hello, guys. I'm BaSangyangjin, I’m from Tibet and you can call me Elsa. I'm fond of Hip hop music , and I'm Actually a big fan of Eminem. I like watching movies, reading novels as well. My favourite actor is Will Smith, and I never miss any of his films. And talk about my favourite writer, that's absolutely KhaledHosseini who wrote The Kite Runner and a lot of excellent novels. N:Wow, I don't know you have so many hobbies! And talk about ourfirst met in The President Cup, I meant “校长杯” , I was amazed by Elsa's spoken english! I love her voice and accent and I long for making friend with her. Coincidently, we aere divided into the same debet group. And we are both big fans of rap music! E: Yeah, like What I've just said. It really surprised me at that time, because I thought that you like some kinds of K-pop songs. N:Oh really? 2. AmazingTibet (1) The influence of K-pop and Western music. N:But honestly , when the first time I knew that Elsa is a big fan of Western music ,I’m kinda of surprise! Maybe it’s a little bit rude to Tibetans, but in my opinion they rarely know about entertainment from foreign countries! E: Haha, it's actually not like that. When I was a little girl, I heard a lot of Taiwan songs ,such as :S.H.E , Jay Chou and so on. And still , there are a lot of Tibetan teenagers around me like Korean music and Japanese music. N: I’m not a fan of K-pop or J-pop but I can tell, pop stars from Taiwan are really my cup of tea. When I was grade six, I was mad about Lolipop, a group of six handsome boys which is a hit at that time. When school was over, I would rush home and turn on the TV to watch their program. Sometimes I would forget to eat! They were my childhood idols and I can still sing their songs by heart. E: Yes! I used to write down the lyrics of those songs, and last summer when I cleaned up my room, I found a box full of different notebooks, and when I opened it, there were hundreds of lyrics. N:So did I. At that time I often used the song lyrics as my QQ signature files. It’s really funny to review it now. Also, I would like to listen to music the whole day in my room! E:But I do not stay in room listening music on weekend, on weekend we are seldom at home. Sometimes we are hanging out with our friends, we can go to different parties, or we go far away from the city to find the peace in the wild nature. N: To go far away from the city, it is very cool, like in some western countries, to have a picnic or to go hiking on weekend, to spend time together and get far closer to nature than us. Are all your parties in open air? E:Yes, there are different activities outdoors. (2) How do you spend your holiday in Tibet?– Traditional Holidays N:I’ve heard that there is a special and popular activity among Tibet people, called “林卡”. Can you tell us more about it? E: oh yeah~ We Tibetan always do that kind of activity in the middle of June ,and it lasts two months, ending with the beginning of August. We usually leave home very early, and drive to some places where we can hold our family picnic. And everyone enjoys different kinds of things, I mean you can go swimming, you can play cards, you can fly the kites. And you won’t be afraid to be alone and feel boring. There are lots of traditional festivals in Tibet, so we have many long holidays. N: That’s cool, can you introduce some of your traditional festivals? E: I guess the Tibetan New Year is the most important festival in Tibet. (N: Like the Spring Festival?) E:Yes, Everyone wears their Tibetan clothes, and we gather together, the elders will drink the “Chang” which is a special Tibetan alcohol. The young people dance together, and on the New Year's Eve, every family having their dinners together, and watching the Tibetan Festival TV shows. TheGUTU is the funniest part on that night. Differentkinds of things refer to different meanings. Some are good, and some are bad. (N:just like in some area people put chilies or sugar or coin in the dumpling!) E:Yes,and the fillings for our GUTUalso include scraps of wood, paper, and coals. (Well, it’s interesting, but, why you choose the things need to be spit out?) E:So we can see what is it on earth. (And there are even coals in your GUTU?It’s unbelievable.) E:Different filling has different meanings, for example, if a person finds chilie in his dough, that means he is talkative. If white-colored ingredients such as salt or rice are hided in the GUTU, it is believed as a good sign. If someone finds coal in his GUTU, it means that one has a "black heart". We'll put those bad ones together and throw it into the cross road,we believe that it can take away the unlucky things from you. Oh, that’s the reason, it’s kind of blessing. Just like in Guangzhou, we usually dress up our brand new clothes and go to the Flower Market with our family. (Flower market?) There are different types of flowers, like chrysanthemum ,cockscomb and kumquat. We would like to purchase some in order to get good luck. It’s the most joyful thing during The Spring Festival,I think. (3) Sky burial E:There is another special ritual in Tibet, maybe you cannot accept. That is the Sky Burial, which means to send the bodies of the dead man to feed the vultures. N:Hold on, hold on. You mean feed the vultures with human flesh!? E:Yes, and that's a little bit scary for the others. N: It really scares me, since in my hometown, we usually use cremation, which means burning the corpse into ashes and keeping the ashes to show respect and mourning to the death. E:Unhun ~ That can be a good way to deal with the death. But in my cultures, we think that when humans are living in this world, we take a lot of sources and when we die, we must pay our body back to the nature, and that's the cycle. What’s more, it is believed that the vultures are Dakinis. Dakinisstand for angels. In Tibetan, Dakini means "sky dancer", who will take the soul into the heavens. N: Tibetan Buddhists attach great important to the respect to nature. And they acknowledged illness and death to be inherent in life itself. E: that’s true. (4) “Prefer boys to girls” N:We can reflect ourselves through those philosophies. May I venture to ask do you have any brothers or sisters? E:Unfortunately,I don't have any brothers or sisters. N: To my surprise that you don’t have any brothers or sisters! Because you are from a minority family and you know, in China there is an old-fashion that prefer boys to girls, which still happens regularly in some coastal developed areas like Chaoshan,Fujian and so on. I thought your family might care about this. E: People are not paying too much attention to that kind of things in my hometown. And we insist that everyone borns equally.I heard that Guangdonese are famous for their excellence at trading as well as their superstition. People in Guangzhou strongly believe in Fengshui, such as the layout of furniture in their apartment. N: Yes, that’s true. Once I wanted to put a full-length mirror beside my desk and my mum forbade that because she thought it might attract ghost or something like that. It’s ridiculous but I did obey her order.I’m scared too hahahahaha. E: We do not agree with those kind of opinions, and maybe it's because our religion belief or the different environment. N: In this way we say that the inland areas are more open than the coastal developed areas. All region sticks to some traditions and no matter where we from, we should show respect to them rather than criticise . E: Yes, and like other regions, Tibet is modernizing with its tradition. N: My wish to travel in Tibet becomes more eager. E:Welcome to Tibet~ 3. Ending N: It seems that we have so many misunderstanding about Tibet. There is an idiom that” What you hear about may be false; what you see is true.” Maybe to better know and explore this amazing and abundant land, we should travel there, have a look at it, feel its unique cultural ambience instead of just searching on the Internet and leaving mean comments while viewing the old pics in old time. Hope that after listening to this episode of The Amazing Ones, you can step out of your room and have a look at this wonderland~ E:yeah~Welcome to tibet and the people in Tibet are really enthusiastic! N: Thanks Elsa for sharing lots of funny things to us. So much for today’s The Amazing Ones. See you next week, byebye!
