Almost Every boy and girl in America has dreamed of being a member of the league one day, just like we saying I will make it to go to Peking University naively. It is their splendid history and dense academic atmosphere that attract genius around globe yearn for it for centuries.Why don’t we take a look at it? Here comes the introduction.
1.Brief Introduction
The Ivy League is a collegiate athletic conference comprising sports teams from eight private institutions of higher education in the Northeastern United States.The eight institutions are Brown University, Columbia University,Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University, and Yale University. The origin of it name may come from a custom that In 1850, class day was placed upon the University Calendar on which students plant thousands of ivies on the hillside.
2.History
ALL of them are of long history. The oldest, the Harvard University,is now sharp 380 years old, which is known as the oldest university globally; the youngest, Cornell University,was established in 1865, the only one after the American Revolutionary War. The first formal athletic league involving eventual Ivy League schools was created in 1870 with the formation of the Rowing Association of American Colleges. A basketball league was later created in 1902, when Columbia, Cornell, Harvard, Yale and Princeton formed the Eastern Intercollegiate Basketball League. In 1906, the organization that eventually became the National Collegiate Athletic Association was formed, primarily to formalize rules for the emerging sport of football.
3.Academic and the body of students
The Ivy League schools are highly selective, with acceptance rates since 2000 ranging from 6 to 16 percent at each of the universities. Admitted students come from around the world, although students from New England and the Northeastern United States make up a significant proportion of students. Further, Ivy League members have produced many Nobel laureates, winners of the Nobel Prize and the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences.
4.Celebrities from the Ivy League
Of the 43 men who have served as President of the United States, 14 have graduated from an Ivy League university. Barack Obama transferred from Occidental College and John Adams was the first president to graduate from college, graduating from Harvard in 1755. Other famous people like Edward Norton, Yang Lan, Donald Trump, Warren Buffet, George Bush, and Hillary Clinton. From these celebrities, you can clearly witness the influence of the colleges.For example, Emma Watson – Brown,graduated in 2003
Watson has promoted education for girls, visiting Bangladesh and Zambia to do so. In September that year, an admittedly nervous Watson-- delivering an address at UN Headquarters in New York City to launch the UN Women campaign He For She, which calls for men to advocate for gender equality.
5.Harvard University
Harvard University is a private Ivy League research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts, established in 1636, whose history, influence, and wealth have made it one of the world's most prestigious universities. It is a large, highly residential research university. The nominal cost of attendance is high, but the University's large endowment allows it to offer generous financial aid packages.[20] It operates several arts, cultural, and scientific museums, alongside the Harvard Library, which is the world's largest academic and private library system. Harvard was formed in 1636 by vote of the Great and General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. It was initially called "New College" or "the college at New Towne". In 1639, the college was renamed Harvard College after deceased clergyman John Harvard, who was an alumnus of the University of Cambridge. He had left the school £779 and his library of some 400 books. The charter creating the Harvard Corporation was granted in 1650. Throughout the 18th century, Enlightenment ideas of the power of reason and free will became widespread and there was a changing of the tide from the dominance of traditional ideas at Harvard to the dominance of liberal, Arminian ideas . During the 20th century, Harvard's international reputation grew as a burgeoning endowment and prominent professors expanded the university's scope. And now in 21st century, the university continues to own the place in the academic field.
6.Yale university
Yale traces its beginnings to "An Act for Liberty to Erect a Collegiate School . The Act was an effort to create an institution to train ministers and lay leadership for Connecticut.Yale's central campus in downtown New Haven covers 260 acres and comprises its main, historic campus and a medical campus adjacent to the Yale-New Haven Hospital. In western New Haven, the university holds 500 acres (2.0 km2) of athletic facilities, including the Yale Golf Course. In 2006, Yale and Peking University (PKU) established a Joint Undergraduate Program in Beijing, an exchange program allowing Yale students to spend a semester living and studying with PKU honor students. In July 2012, the Peking University-Yale University Program ended due to weak participation.
7.Brown univ.
Brown is the seventh-oldest institution of higher education in the United States and one of the nine Colonial Colleges established before the American Revolution. At its foundation, Brown was the first college in the United States to accept students regardless of their religious affiliation. Its engineering program, established in 1847, was the first in the Ivy League. Brown's theatre and playwriting programs are among the best-regarded in the country. Since 2003 eight different Brown graduates have either won 4 times or been nominated for six times the Pulitzer Prize.
8.Colombia Univ
It was established in 1754 as King's College by royal charter of George II of Great Britain. Columbia is the oldest college in the state of New York and the fifth chartered institution of higher learning in the country, making it one of nine colonial colleges founded before the Declaration of Independence.The university is organized into twenty schools,Along with NYU and the Catholic Church, Columbia University is one of the top 3 largest landowners in New York City.Columbia is home to two pioneers in undergraduate campus radio broadcasting, WKCR-FM and CTV. WKCR, the student run radio station that broadcasts to the Tri-State area, claims to be the oldest FM radio station in the world, owing to the university's affiliation with Major Edwin Armstrong.
Some people comment the eight universities in this way: Absolutely, they’re the best of the best. We used to be daydreamers boasting we can go to top universities with ease but then as we grow up we realize The extremely low enrollment rate makes your oath mostly sounds like a joke. However,it maybe true that we can never go to the Ivy League for study, you still can figure out ways to seek after perfection.
