N: Hello, everyone. Welcome to The Amazing Ones. We invite amazing people to share amazing stories with us! Hope you find the joy in our program. And long time no see, here is Nas! (And here is Bridge~ And this is Jackie.) This is my second official record this semester, kind of nervous. And our guest today is a really really humorous girl. Let’s welcome!
T: Hi everyone. I’m Tommy, from College of Resources and Environment, class 1710. Well, I’m a outgoing girl from Inner Mongolia Province. Somehow I’m not normal because I’m too tall! (Can you tell the audience how tall are you?) I like swimming, guitar, paintings and especially shopping! I’m now with great excitement and tension to meet you guys here and it’s of such an honor to be a part of this prestigious radio program. Thank you Bridge, Jackie and Nas again for inviting me.
N: Oh, it’s our pleasure! Em, I remember that, Bridge, you’re from Beijing, right? So, I wonder do you think you’re a typical Northern person?
B: Oh, of course! You know, Tommy is from Inner Mongolia, there is no doubt that she is a pure northerner. When we were chatting, we have countless common topics to talk about, meanwhile, We have a lot of same living habits.
N: And what about you Tommy?
T: Well, as Bridge said, I’m from the Northwest of our country. I think I can represent our area! As for me, Northern people are very bold and forthright. A lot of them are tall and strong and kind of like making things straight. I really appreciate the openness and directness of Northerners, and of my own.
N: Exactly, I love your personalities and there is a magic charm that forces me to make friends with you! And you know, Wuhan locates in the middle of China, closer to the Southern part. Even it contains the trait from both the north and the south, but after all, Wuhan is a Southern city. I wonder when you guys first came to Wuhan, what is the most unacceptable things to you?
B: Well, when the first time I came here, I don't think Wuhan has any difference from my hometown, but when I stayed here for a few days, I really can't stand the humid environment, the damp air makes it hard for me to dry my clothes, and when I left a packet of potato chips on the table, after a night, the potato chips will become soft, I was really shocked by that. And do you know? It only takes one night to dry a T-shirt in my hometown, and the open snacks won’t be soften during two or three days.
T: Yes! I feel as the same! It’s way too much wet for me. All of my clothes kept in the closets are wet. I always scream out loud:” What the heck is going on with my dresses!?” That’s uncomfortable! Sometimes I even doubt that a buster pours some water in my closet... And you know, few days ago it was very cold and wet here. Without the radiator, it’s piercing! I wanna put my fur on! (Em, the radiator you mentioned is 地暖?) Yes! Which is normal to be used to keep warm in the north, I’m already miss it!
N: Okay, I got it. To be honestly, not only for you, I can’t bear the weather in Wuhan too! It’s so changeable! Yesterday I wore the T-shirt and short shorts, then today I’m dressed in sweater. You can never tell what the weather will be like the next day, even the weather report! Because of the changeable, disgusting weather here, I catch a cold more frequently than I’m in Guangzhou. So I’m quite afraid that winter is around the corner, I might get sick soon when the temperature suddenly change.
J: You guys know that I'm from Hunan province, which is below Hubei province, a further south place. But yeah, nobody likes the humid climate. When it's between spring and winter, the situation is even worse. Not only those clothes, foods and the quilts are getting strange, but also the moisture beaded on the floor on the wall. People are easily to slip in doors. Every time between spring and winter I'll be bad-tempered. I guess that's the crazy and less bearable weather's fault.
N: Tell me about that.
B: Besides the weather, the another thing I want to say is the eating habit! As a foodie, I like to taste all kinds of delicious food. But I really can’t bear the sweet jellied bean curd, meat moon cake and the meat rice dumplings. In addition, I still wonder why the 麻辣烫 in south area without Sesame sauce.
J: You’re quite adhere to the sesame sauce, you keep mentioning it during our conversation! Please sent us some when you go back to Beijing.
T: Hah, well, I kind of like Wuhan this time. Because I lost a dozen pounds since I moved here! I’m not accustomed to the food here at all! I’m a girl growing up with meat! Pork, mutton, veal, those are my daily recipes! So I spent my first month here with soft drinks and gruel. Life is tough.
J: And I’ve heard that, when Northern people go to the supermarket, you will buy a bunch of food to store at home, while we southern people don't. Maybe that's also related to the climate. The northen climate seems drier and that's good for food storage. But in the south, food are easily be stale or even go bad.
B: Yep! Maybe we can meet some situation like this in our daily life: A northerner and a southerner went to the supermarket to buy some vegetables. The Northerner said:” Ouch, this cabbage is good, give me 10 catties.” But at the same time, the southerner said:” Well, this cabbage looks okay, cut me half! ” Tell the truth, I’m afraid the boss will take a table to sharpen this southerner, hah!
T: That’s true! If you wanna take some pork, you need to say:” Hey man, get me a ham!” Maybe you can’t have eat all once a time, but you got a refrigerator! And in the northern kingdom, if there is someone saying :” Come to my house, I’ll make a pot of meat for you.” He means it for the real one! It’s only with meat, without vegetables!
N: Em, although I have never traveled to a Northern city, I do have a classmate from Shandong Province. One day I went to visit her, then her mother served a huge round pots to the table, filled with braised ribs. It was really really huge, I swear I have never seen a pots like this. The diameter of it might be around 15 centimeters and the chopsticks can’t even reach its bottom! It’s unbelievable! But my friend is like: ”What a big deal? It’s just a pot. ” Till now, I still don’t figure out why you Northern family prefer to store food and cook for a three-or-four-days meal!
B: In fact, sometimes we have to eat leftovers for a few days, Hah. So, by this way, maybe we needn’t to do extra meal during these days.
T: Hah, you said that. And I’m so freaking out when I first heard that cockroaches in the south is as big as my thumbs. One of my friends, a boy around 180 centimeter height, when he first saw the southern cockroaches, he was literally scared to dance!
N: Hah! That for me is super normal! I just slap my slipper on it and clean it up. That’s nothing!
B: Whaaaaaat! Frankly speaking, every time when I see a big cockroach, I choose to hide out and ask my roommate for help…BTW, If one day I hit a flying cockroach, maybe I'll faint. Oh! It's really a shame to say that.
N: Never mind, I know a lot of big boys are afraid of cockroach.
J: I'm afraid of that, too. Bugs are my nightmare. Every time I see a cockroach I would scream, run away and beg my roommate for help. Once they don't want their shoes to be stained with the disgusting cockroach's fluid, they cheated another friend, saying they wanted to buy shoes and need hers as a reference. But they still washed her shoes after killing the cockroach with the shoes.
N: Hah, you guys are so clever! And l have to say, I love the mandarin accent from the North as much as I love the British accent! It’s so cute and it makes everything funny when you pronounce it! So I always imitate that kind of accent, but fail. That’s why my mandarin sounds so strange!
B: Hah! Since I went to the college, I feel my mandarin mixed a little Dongbei accent. Maybe it's because Dongbei accent is brainwashed.
N: Why not show us some examples!?
N: ... And there is one thing I can’t understand is the way you play. You guys would fight together just for jokes? That’s ridiculous! If you fight with somebody, it means a serious one in my place.
J: Well, Nas, in my hometown we sometimes would do that, too. But, some of my friends will be easily lose control, and then, things just turn into a fight. That's what we don't want to see.
N: Yes.. There is a lot of difference between us. But sometimes, you know, we don’t have the opportunity to travel outside our hometown or go somewhere far far away. In this case it may bring about misunderstanding, regional discrimination and something like that. As for me, I think the skeleton of northerner is broad and even the girls are as strong as a tiger. I feel safe when I stand besides them!
T: Em, what else, I think Southerners are shy, and sometimes more polite than the Northerners. You know, I’m such a tall girl with 180cm height, which is not normal to most people. In my hometown, I’m always asked how tall you are or something even ruder than this. People staring at you, makes you feel like a monster. But people in the south will take good care of your feelings. They’ll be shy to ask you questions when they are not familiar with you.
J: Yes, maybe we are more considerate, we don't want others feel uncomfortable because of our reckless behavior.
N: You are right. When I first met Tommy in the master cup, my little OS was like: OMG, that girl is so tall! She’s definitely from the North! But I just greet you calmly on the surface. I didn’t ask how tall are you until we got familiar.
J: We’ve talked about differences all the time, are there something in common between our two ares?
B: Em, in my opinion, maybe the biggest common between this two area is we all love various kinds of delicious food and our country. No one can stop thinking tasty food!
J: Yes! Especially the hot pot!!
Free talk part: The city you want to travel in the another area is..? Why?
N: Well, today we talk about a lot of differences between the South and the North. I suppose the situations we mentioned before might be your experience. If you have such embarrassing experience, please make comment down below our program! Let’s discuss and discover these amazing moments! So much for today The Amazing Ones, and thanks Tommy for sharing your stories! See you next week! Bye!~
