Snow Day

Rosie presses her nose against the cold window. Snow is falling and the ground is covered in white. Rosie lives in the country. It’s the first snow day of the year.
“Rosie,” calls her sister, Tess. “What are you doing?”
“I ’m watching the snow,” Rosie calls back.
Tess and Rosie talk about the snow while they eat.
“Mom, can we go outside?” they ask.
“Yes, but bundle up,” Mom says. “It’s cold out there!”
The girls dress in their warmest clothes.
“What should we do?” asks Rosie.
“That’s a good question,” Tess says. “I know! Let’s build a snowman.”
Tess gathers some nuts. She says, “These can be the snowman’s eyes ! We can use a carrot for the nose.”
“And seeds for the mouth!” adds Rosie.
“Time to come warm up!” calls Mom.
The children scramble inside.
“Can we make hot chocolate?” Rosie asks.
“Good idea,” says Mom.
“Then we can have a snowball fight!” Rosie adds.
Later, Rosie says, “I wish today didn’t have to end.”
“This has been the first of many snow days this month,” says Mom.
Tess laughs. “Look!” she says. “A deer is gnawing our snowman’s nose!”
Rosie says, “I love living in the country!”
