Hey everyone
Today's topic is being polite (有礼貌)
English is a very polite language, especially when dealing with strangers
Sometimes it can be very different to Chinese.
But in English you would say:
Could you please give me a cup of water?
If you just said "give me a cup of water", the waiter would think you were very rude (没礼貌).
Even if you say "please give me a cup of water", it still sounds weird (怪怪的).
So let's have a look at some ways to be more polite in English!
1. ASKING FOR SOMETHING
Could I have ... please?
Actually, this is better than "could you give me"
Could I have a cappuccino please?
Could I have the bill please?
You can also say:
Could I get... please?
Could I get some sugar please?
2. TALKING ABOUT WHAT YOU WANT
I would like... please
= I'd like... please
I'd like a garden salad please
I'd like two tickets please
But we usually say "Could I have" / "Could I get" when buying something
Could I have" / "Could I get"
Don't say "I want" - it's too direct and not so polite
3. ASKING FOR PERMISSION
Do you mind if...
Do you mind if I sit here?
Do you mind if I smoke?
When you want to say "no problem!" to this question:
No, not at all!
4. ASKING FOR INFORMATION
I was wondering...
I was wondering if you were free tomorrow night?
(We use "I was wondering if + past tense)
I was wondering when my order will arrive?
