Emma Watson Turned Down Cinderella Before Taking on 'Beauty and the Beast'
We're only a couple months away from seeing Emma Watson star as Belle in Beauty and the Beast, but it turns out she was originally considered for a different Disney role — Cinderella. In an interview with Total Film, Watson revealed she turned down the starring role in the hit film because Cinderella just wasn't that interesting to her.
In her words: “I didn’t know they were going to make Beauty and the Beast at the time I turned down Cinderella. But when they offered me Belle, I just felt the character resonated with me so much more than Cinderella did. She remains curious, compassionate and open-minded. And that’s the kind of woman I would want to embody as a role model, given the choice. In a strange way, [Belle] challenges the status quo of the place she lives in, and I found that really inspiring. And also, she manages to keep her integrity and have a completely independent point of view. She’s not easily swayed by other people’s perspective; not swayed by fearmongering or scapegoating."
That all makes sense when you consider Emma's extracurriculars. These days she's known for fighting for women's rights and dropping feminist literature on the London tube. So yeah, we can see her preferring Belle to Cinderella.
