Artificial intelligence, or AI, no longer simply exists in science fiction movies and books. Scientists warn that AI will continue to change almost every aspect of people’s life and that AI can be a threat, as well as helpful to humans. AI has been around for some time, but it is quickly getting more complex and more intelligent.
“If we want to make systems that are going to be more intelligent than us, it’s absolutely necessary for us to understand how to guarantee that they only do good things for us,” said professor Stuart Russell. “Many present-day jobs would be replaced by machines with artificial intelligence. But if we replace all the jobs that require human physical labor and then replace all the jobs that require human mental labor, you have to ask, ‘What’s left?’” And the giant factory or the tall office building with thousands of people doing the same things will go away. But there is also a dangerous side of AI, making autonomous weapons out of drone technology.
“The risk with autonomous weapons is that people will use them as a kind of poor man’s weapon of mass destruction,” said Russell. “The international community needs to create treaties to ban autonomous weapons.”
While it is up for debate whether AI will hurt or benefit humans, scientists say that the technology will continue to change our life. As for the conflict whether AI will be a killer of humans or a helper, what are your tips? Which side do you stand up for?
