第三章原文
不尚贤,使民不争;不贵难得之货,使民不为盗;不见可欲,使民心不乱。是以圣人之治,虚其心,实其腹;弱其志,强其骨。常使民无知无欲,使夫智者不敢为也。为无为,则无不治。——《道德经》
译文
不崇尚标榜贤才,使民众不起争心;不炒作炫耀难得的货物,使民众不去做盗贼;不展现能引起人私欲的东西,使民众心不受惑乱。所以圣人的治理,使民众虚心、饱腹;减弱民众的欲望,强壮民众的身体。使民众常保持无知无欲的自然淳朴状态,那些诡计多端的人就不敢耍诈。以无为来治世,则没有治理不好的。

Putting a value on status
will create contentiousness.
If you overvalue possessions, people begin to steal.
By not displaying what is desirable, you will
cause the people’s hearts to remain undisturbed.
The sage governs
by emptying minds and hearts,
by weakening ambitions
and strengthening bones.
Practice not doing.
When action is pure and selfless,
everything settles into its own perfect place.
