Hello, welcome to Education Today, brought to you from our studio here in Beijing.
I'm Luo Yu, sitting in for Wu You.
Coming up, we are going to talk about the job prospects of big data.
Well, some of you may not have heard of big data and you may not know what it does but others are definitely using it to find you.
Every time you purchase something online, use your credit card, send an e-mail, or just search on the internet, you leave some kind of footprint, and this footprint becomes part of a huge set of data which helps companies build up a profile of your 'personality', life style choice, preferences, food
habits, travel destinations and so on. Sounds pretty scary? Well, there are definitely privacy concerns there.
On the other hand though, big data can also be very useful for governments when it comes to distributing the funding of vital resources to certain areas by having more accurate information. Likewise, businesses could use such data to predict consumer trends and be better prepared to direct which way their business should go.
Sounds pretty amazing, doesn't it? Today in our program we will talk a little about what a data analyst does in their everyday work and we've also got some advice if you want to pursue a career in big data.
Paul Arthur, Professor of Digital Humanities at the University of Western Sydney explains what big data is.

Frank Yu, CEO of Kwestr, a marketing engagement platform, further explains its applications.

For more information, I spoke earlier with Li Fangxing, Analytics Engineer Manager of Lattice Engines, a U.S. Big Data company pioneering the predictive applications market for marketing and sales.

And finally, here are some advice for future data scientists. Mr. Li Fangxing.

In a nutshell, you need to know Computer sciences and Information systems; Mathematics and Statistics, Industry knowledge and business acumen to be a qualified data scientist. It'll be challenging yet rewarding!
And finally Moving to the U.S.,
Harvard has received $350 million — its largest-ever single donation — from a foundation run by a wealthy Hong Kong family led by alumnus and longtime benefactor Gerald L. Chan.
The Harvard Crimson reports that the University will rename the school the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, in honor of Chan's late father.
This is the first time in its history that Harvard has renamed one of its schools in recognition of philanthropy.
Chan's gift ranks seventh among donations to U.S. universities. That list is topped by a $600 million pledge by Intel Corp. co-founder Gordon Moore and his wife, Betty, to the California Institute of Technology in 2001.
