The very real possibility of an independent Scotland began on December 17, 2013 when the Scottish independence Referendum Bill received Royal Assent. However, it has not been until recently that English politicians, and perhaps the rest of the world, has taken this possibility seriously. Perhaps it is the looming voting date of September 18 or the predictive polling that shows the "No" vote is slowly slipping.
Why has it taken the idea of Scottish independence so long to be taken seriously? What does Scotland gain? What would the relationship between England and Scotland be like if the "Yes" camp is to win?
