Ukraine has ruled out direct negotiations between the Kiev government and pro-Russian separatists. The negotiations were meant to end six months of conflict in the east of the country.

"We will not hold direct negotiations with Russian terrorists. I translate into Russian: We will not hold direct negotiations with your mercenaries."
Earlier in the day, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called on Kiev to open a direct dialogue with the rebels.
However, Yatseniuk called on Russia to abide by a peace formula drawn up in the Belarussian capital Minsk in September.
"If you want peace, abide by the Minsk deal. In order to have guarantees of reaching peace, we need a format that is acceptable to the whole world and first of all acceptable for Ukraine. We need guarantees."
