Next, please follow my steps to understanding Chengdu. 成都，简称蓉，四川省省会、副省级市，国家历史文化名城、中国最佳旅游城市和南方丝绸之路的起点、“十大古都”之一，约在公元前5世纪筑城，西汉时已成为中国六大都市之一，三国时期为蜀汉国都。北宋年间成都人联合发行世界最早的纸币交子，官府在成都设立世界最早的管理储蓄银行交子务。2600多年的建城史孕育了都江堰、武侯祠、杜甫草堂、金沙遗址等众多名胜古迹。 金川 Yinchuan Autumn is the best time of the year for travelling outdoors in Sichuan's mountains. In autumn, after the summer rains, the landscapes are lush and the skies are clear and crisp; the temperatures are amenable for walking; and - most alluringly of all - the forests display a kaleidoscope of autumn colors of drying leaves. These autumn landscapes are their most vivacious and fiery in the first half of November. I have travelled extensively throughout Sichuan and below is a roundup of the best places where the autumn colors are at their most fiery. 唐家河 Tangjiahe This little-known town on the Dadu River a few hours' drive north of Danba is attractive in its own right. The country houses out of town reflect that ethnic mix. The town is famous for its pears, and pear orchards are found on terraced fields on the lower slopes of the mountains. The drying leaves of the pear trees turn russet in autumn, and the spectacle is at its best a couple of kilometers north of the town proper where there is the densest cluster of pear orchards. Seen from vantage points, the panorama is unforgettable: the reddish colors of the pear orchards, the meandering slithering green-brown body of water of the Dadu River, the farmhouses with their white walls, the punctuations of stand-out features (Buddhist stops swathed in prayer flags, minarets of mosques, high turrets of the Qiang people), the brownish bulk of the mountains higher up the slopes with groves of the pine forests on south-facing slopes, the ethereally blue sky. In the heavily-forested mountains of Qingchuan county in the north of Sichuan (about 6 hours' drive north of Chengdu), the red autumn colors are at their best in protected forests of Tangjiahe nature reserve. The nature reserve itself is 20 kilometers north of Qingxi town, a small regional town that sits on a plain. Old-style peasant farmhouses – with walls constructed of wooden frames and white-washed plaster, roofs of traditional black tiles, and wooden beams and doors and windows painted in maroon color - are scattered among the patchwork of fields north of Qingxi on the way to Tangjiahe. 九寨沟及周边 Jiuzhaigou and around Jiuzhaigou is mostly famous for its thunderous waterfalls and lakes of clear azure or greenish waters, and the lakes create an evocative contrast with the reddish colors of the forests on the lower slopes in autumn. In the same region there are another 2 nature reserves where the autumn russet colors can be enjoyed. These are Huanglong and Wanglang nature reserves – both nature reserves attract fewer tourists than Jiuzhaigou, but they are less spectacular scenically for autumn colors. 其他推荐 Other places There are also other places where autumn colors are in wonderful variegation. This includes the road leading from Wolong to Danba via Siguniang Shan – Wolong is one of the most significant nature reserves in China, home to the largest community of pandas; Mt. Siguniang is a vast knot of mountains with alpine habitat – it's also a road that is treacherously spectacular in parts, making it a scenic drive. Another place is in north Sichuan near the border with Shaanxi, at a nature reserve called Micang Shan. This place is famous for its two flat-topped hills, and the gorges and underground rivers.
