Passage 4 Gender discrimination in job hunting Song: When you say nothing at all
The cartoon depicts a distressing scene of a job fair. The girl who maybe had been turned down many times in a row, found it frustrating to be told that the vacancy as open only to male applicants. Small wonder, a majority of female job applicants experience gender discrimination in job hunting.
This reflects formidable barriers that women may face in the job market. In many cases, employers will not directly say that they are not interested in female candidates. For example, a company requests you not to get married or pregnant for a certain period of time. Even worse, an employer says only men are wanted for a certain position, claiming that the job involves heavy workloads or lots of travel which cannot be “suitable” for a woman. There are some other forms that are to subtle to recognize.
To ameliorate the situation, efforts by labor authorities to fine violators could serve as a deterrent and encourage victims to seek protection of their rights. Last but not the lest, women applicants must still learn to speak up.
