So today we're going to start with "adverbs before adjectives"
The adverbs we're going to start with today are:
"somewhat" and "fairly" = "not very"
Shanghai is a very expensive city, Chengdu is somewhat expensive.
For example, if we remove the adverbs from the sentences above.
"Shanghai is an expensive city, Chengdu is an expensive city."
It makes no sense!
But of course, they're not equal
Okay ... so now I'm going to ask you "Do you like your hometown?"
I want you to answer using AT LEAST two adverbs before adjectives.
"pretty friendly" 很好
I love my hometown. The scenery is extremely pretty, but the people are somewhat rude.
So don't forget, these adverbs should go before adjectives.
That's what we're going to study now!
Conjunctions!!!
Used to connect sentences..
or "clauses"
The two most important conjunctions are "and" and "but"
Beijing is a historical city, and it's home to many of China's artists.
So let's practice using "and" and "but" by doing the questions
Combine the two sentences by choosing "and" or "but"
Okay, so now we get to "though" and "however"
"though" and "however" have the same meaning as "but"
But they usually go at the end of a sentence.
Like the examples:
It's a big city. It's not too big, though.
Some people like to bargain in the markets
If you really LIKE to bargain, you could say the sentence this way
"The shopping is great, and you get to bargain in the markets!"
I don't like bargaining in the markets either...
So for me, it's definitely a "but"
So now I want you to make a sentence, NOT about your hometown.
Make a sentence about some other place you've been.
And use a conjunction to combine two ideas together.
Pixian in Chengdu is an extremely cheap place to live, but it's also boring on the weekends.
Both of these grammars, we use hundreds of times every day.
I think some students need more new information...
I'm really looking forward to using the next book, Cambrdige Interchange 2
I'm not sure which students will continue on with me in the next part....
But I will definitely try to make it a bit more challenging and interesting.
I think really this book, Interchange 1...
The most important thing is to memorize:
All of the simple past tense verbs
All of the participles
Those things are really important ... memorize all the basic verb forms.
