Into the distance, more than ten thousand miles
we were led till we reached the Grand Army.
In the army some suffer and others delight—
the Commander surely does not hear all.
Beyond the River I saw Hu cavalry[1],
in an instant, a band of hundreds.
For the first time now I’ve become a slave—
when will I do those great deeds of glory?
