Going Out the Passes: First Series
IV
To take troops to the front there is someone in charge,
for duty in far garrisons there are also ourselves.
We go off forward to live or die,
sergeants[1] need not take the trouble to glare.
On the road I once met someone I knew,
by him I sent a letter home to kin.
It’s a sad thing that we are kept apart
and will never share our hardships again.
