1. Beijing is now home to 21.5 million people. The city’s population has grown rapidly in recent years. Millions of migrants from all across China come seeking jobs. 2. Wang runs four hostels on the outskirts of Beijing. He calls these places “the alliance of Beijing drifters”. The rent he charges each tenant is only 15 Yuan per day. On average, it costs 4500 Yuan per month to rent a one bedroom apartment in Beijing. These hostels are illegal, but about 40 migrant workers live in this one, because it’s all they can afford. 3. Beijing’s rapid urbanization has led to a housing shortage. Many migrant workers can’t afford to live in the city, so they’ve built makeshift homes on the outskirts.But a fire in one such building killed 19 people in November 2017. The government began to bulldoze makeshift homes due to “safety concerns”. 4.
