Gong Li, Huang Xiaoming awarded at 12th Changchun Film Festival
"American Dreams in China", or zhong guo he huo ren, has become the biggest winner at the newly concluded Changchun Film Festival.
The movie reaped five major honours at the closing ceremony last night, including best Chinese feature film, best director, best actor, best supporting actor and best photography.
"American Dreams in China" was directed by Hong Kong's Peter Chan. It stars Huang Xiaoming, Tong Dawei and Deng Chao.
The film follows the story of three friends who set up a successful English language school in China.
But they face a lot of difficulties when they try to list the company on the American stock market.
Huang Xiaoming was awarded Best Actor for his performance in the film, beating strong competitors such as Chen Daoming and Liao Fan.
Tong Dawei was named the best supporting actor.
Meanwhile, actress Gong Li was awarded the best actress for her nuanced performance in Zhang Yimou's film "Coming Home".
'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' Roars Chinese Box Office
Sci-fi action movie "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" appears to be a major hit among Chinese movie-goers.
The sequel opened in China on the weekend and earned a massive 47 million US dollar box office.
Global receipts now top 600 million dollars.
The previous Planet of the Apes movie had earned around 480 million at this point. It opened in 2011.
20th Century Fox says the sequel's debut in China was one of the best in history for a western movie, in line with Iron Man 3 and Transformers: Age of Extinction.
Over the summer, Transformers earned more than 300 million dollars to become the top-grossing film in China.
Thanks to the China opening, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes topped the international weekend chart, toppling "Guardians of the Galaxy" from the top spot.
"Guardians of the Galaxy" is also a strong competitor. It has topped the American box office for two consecutive weekends.
"Guardians of the Galaxy" will hit Chinese screens on October 10.
China Box Office expected to pass 30 bln yuan
The latest data shows China's box office has reached nearly 20 billion yuan, or over 3 billion US dollars, by the end of last month.
The revenue reflects a 31-percent growth compared to the same period last year.
Around 200 movies hit the theatres in the past eight months.
41 of them passed the 100-million benchmark.
China's box office surpassed 20 billion yuan by the end of last year.
Analysis suggests this year's total revenue could reach 30 billion yuan.
Miss HK 2014 top three elected
Miss Hong Kong 2014 has been crowned.
The final round featured 10 contestants, gracefully waiting for the announcement.
Veronic Shiu claimed the honour.
She received more than 150-thousand votes.
Shiu was also awarded Miss Friendship and Miss Photogenic.
Three contestants who enjoyed extensive media exposure before the finale all failed to make to the top three.
The Miss Hong Kong pageant has a long history but has suffered much criticism in recent years, mostly concentrating on the qualities of the participants.
But this year's participants were reportedly the most appreciated of the last few years.

The 45-year-old singer/songwriter tied the knot with 28-year-old Penny Jiang yesterday.
David Tao describes his wife as his woman of destiny and claims she has completely changed his life.
The couple's wedding attracted lots of celebrities, including Leehom Wang, Jay Chou and JJ Lin.
David Tao also performed the song "You Will Marry Me Today" with his new wife, the bridesmaid, and the groomsman.

Jennifer Lawrence says photo leak "flagrant violation of privacy"
Someone has stolen nude photos of Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence and posted them online.
Her spokesperson says Lawrence's phone was hacked.
The spokesperson has issued a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, calling it "a flagrant violation of privacy".
The statement also says the authorities will prosecute anyone who posts the stolen photos.
As many as 60 nude photos of the actress have already been posted online.
Lawrence is not the first celebrity to suffer this kind of embarassment.
In 2011, more than 50 female celebrities were targeted in a serious hacking incident which drew the FBI to investigate.
The hacker was later arrested and sentenced to 10 years in prison.
