China's Non-Manufacturing rebounds in August China's non-manufacturing activity recorded a slight recovery in August, boosted by the service sector. Statistics authorities say the official non-manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index has risen 0.2 points from a month earlier to 54.4 in August. The index tracks business activity in sectors including construction, aviation, railways and real estate. The service sector accelerated moderately, with its index rising 0.4 points from July to stand at 53.6. But business activity in the construction sector began to slow down, with its index retreating to 57.7. Readings above 50 mean expansion. Economists say component indices suggest a mixed picture rather than a broad-based rebound. And the economy still faces downside risks to growth in the second half of the year from the property sector slowdown. The latest flagship report indicates China and the ASEAN-5 showed dynamics in competitiveness. Hong Kong held its berth of seventh, while the Chinese mainland gained one place, rising to 28. Economists suggest China make more efforts to improve market efficiency. The competitiveness ranking is based on the Global Competitiveness Index, based on 12 criteria, including innovation, market efficiency, health, and primary education.
