17th Beijing Int'l Music Festival commemorates Richard Strauss' 150th birth anniversary The annual Beijing International Music Festival is underway in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of German composer Richard Strauss' birth. This year's event is themed "burst into music fantasy: Richard Strauss in Beijing". Artists and orchestras from France, Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and China will perform Strauss' most popular works, including Don Juan. There will be 19 performances within 22 days in the forms of opera, orchestra, chamber music, solo and harmony. Two operas by Strauss, 'Ariadne auf Naxos' and 'Elektra', will be making their Chinese debut during the festival. Film Adaptation of Wolf Totem to Greet Audience in Feb. 2015 The film adaptation of Chinese novel "Wolf Totem" is set to greet audiences during the Chinese New Year Holiday next year. The film, directed by Oscar-winning French director Jean-Jacques Annaud, was shot in Inner Mongolia, where the story is set. It depicts the differences between the lives of Mongolian nomads and the Han Chinese through the eyes of Chen Zhen, who left his home in Beijing to work in Inner Mongolia in the 1970s. Through observing and interacting with the wolves that wander on the prairie, Chen came to understand and respect the freedom, independence and determination of the nomads. The film is the first Chinese production shot by a foreign director. It stars actors Feng Shaofeng and Dou Xiao. The original novel, a bestseller by Jiang Rong, has won many awards since its publication ten years ago. Taylor Swift Releases New Song "Out of the Woods" from Album "Out of the Woods", another new song from Taylor Swift's upcoming album "1989", is out today. It has been co-written with Jack Antonoff of the band "Fun.". Unlike her last hit "Shake it Off", Out of the Woods is not the main single from the album. Swift says she released it because she thinks it best represents the spirit of the new album. "Out of the Woods" is one of my favourite songs on this album because one of the goals I set out to accomplish when I wanted to make this album is I wanted to make sure that these songs sounded exactly like the emotions felt when I felt them." The song has already topped the iTunes chart, with Shake it Off following in 2nd place. Swift's 5th studio album 1989 will hit the shelves on October 27. Gone Girl, Breakup Buddies top North American, Chinese Box Offices This week's new film Dracula Untold has failed to shake Gone Girl's dominance in the North American box office. Dracula Untold opened with 23.5 million US dollars in the first week, while Gone Girl grossed 26.8 million in its second week and remains on top of the box office with a total of 78.3 million US dollars. Alexander, Annabelle and the Judge trailed behind in 3rd to 5th place. Over in China, Ning Hao's comedy Breakup Buddies is topping the Chinese box office, taking in nearly 50 million US dollars this week. In 2nd and 3rd places are Guardians of the Galaxy and Dearest. Picasso Self-portrait Goes on Show in London A 1901 self portrait by Pablo Picasso is being displayed at the Ordovas gallery in London. It has never been exhibited in public before. The portrait shows the artist aged 30, looking directly at the viewer while painting by candlelight. The painting is on display alongside a 1969 self-portrait by Francis Bacon. The exhibition, themed "self", also features works by Geoff Koons and Damien Hirst. It runs until December 13. Kung Fu Killer Premiers at London Film Festival 3D martial arts thriller Kung Fu Killer has premiered at the 58th London Film Festival, in its Thrill section. Director Teddy Chan, actor Donnie Yen and actress Michelle Bai attended the red carpet ceremony. It has been nominated for Best Action Choreography at Taiwan's Golden Horse Awards this year. It is scheduled for release in Chinese cinemas on October 31. Classic Comedy to Reopen in Cinemas The iconic comedy series "A Chinese Odyssey", or da hua xi you, will reopen in Chinese theatres next Friday. The 1994 fantasy-comedy film was directed and written by Jeffrey Lau, starring Stephen Chow and Karen Mok among others.
