World number one Serena Williams defends her WTA finals title in Singapore
In tennis,
The WTA finals are underway in Singapore. The first match for tonight between World Number 1 Serena Williams and the No. 7 seed Ana Ivanovic just kicked off 7 PM Beijing Time.
Williams is on the second-longest winning streak in WTA finals history, having won her last 15 matches at the WTA Finals.
Only Martina Navrotilova have won more WTA finals in a row, having won 21 games.
But Ana Ivanovic remains unbeaten this season, having won all of the 56 matches which she faced this year.
On the sidelines of the WTA finals,
Russian Tennis Federation President Shamil Tarpischev was fined 24,000 dollars and given a one-year ban from the women's tour, after referring to the William sisters Serena and Venus as "the Williams brothers" on Russian TV.
He questioned the powerful playing style of the duo and asking whether the two were actually women.
The William sisters criticized the comment as a "sexist, racist and bullying" one.
Tennis: Andy Murray secures final spot in the World Tour Finals for Men
Andy Murray defeated David Ferrer in Austria to secure the last qualifying spot for the World Tour Finals in Men's Tennis.
There were six contenders vying for the spot, but Murray jumped ahead of Ferrer and Milos Raonic with a 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 win in finals of the Vienna open this weekend.
Murray's chances of playing in the World Tour looked slim, when he lost the Shanghai Open title earlier this month, and analysts pointed out that he has not been in top-form this year.
This was reflected in his appearance at a relatively low key tournament like the Vienna Open at the tail end of the season. Murray spoke to the media after his win
"The last few years I have managed to qualify for it without having to play every week at the end of the year, so it is a different challenge, so it is going to be interesting. There are no guarantees, so I will have to win more matches over the next few weeks, but I have given myself a good chance by winning here."
Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Stan Wawrinka, Tomas Berdych and US Open champion Marin Cilic have already secured their places in the World Tour Finals, to be held next month in London.
Rugby: Hong Kong crowned Asian sevens champions
In Rugby news:
Hong Kong defeated South Korea 36-19 to be crowned the Asian sevens champions for 2014.
The third and final leg of the series took place at the Chaoyang stadium in Beijing over the weekend.
The victory extended Hong Kong's domination of the series, winning all three legs, to finish unbeaten this season.
Japan defeated Sri Lanka 24-19 to finish third in championships.
Meanwhile, in the women's tournament, Japan defeated China 24-19 to win their first game this season.
This was a hard blow to the Chinese women's team, who had to share the Asian Games Gold medal for Rugby Sevens with Japan earlier this month.
Rugby sevens is a variant of Rugby, where teams are made up of seven players, instead of the usual 15, with shorter matches.
