Death toll from Nepal quake tops 7,056-update At least 7,056 people have now been confirmed dead in the devastating earthquake in Nepal, Over 14,100 others were injured. The World Health Organization has been sending teams to the affected areas to help with medical aid and epidemic prevention. The quake has done great harm to the country's tourism industry as at least 14 historic buildings have been in ruins. 12 of these are UNESCO World Heritage sites. Quake-stricken Nepal shuts airport to big jets amid runway damage Quake-hit Nepal has been forced to again shut its only international airport, the Tribhuwan International Airport, as the only runway is severely damaged. Local officials say the damaged runway cannot handle large aircrafts flying in to help. Many foreign countries planning to send heavy airplanes to Nepal for humanitarian assistance are now requested not to come to the country. A recent notice issued by the country's Civil Aviation Authority says aircrafts from foreign countries of above 196 tons of weight cannot land. So far, three heavy aircrafts from Canada and four military transporters from the US have not been allowed to land. Cross-Strait economic forum opens in Shanghai-update A forum on the cross-Straits economic, trade and cultural ties officially kicked off in Shanghai on Sunday. It focuses on small and medium-sized companies, aiming to build a consensus and to promote the peaceful development of cross-Straits relations. Yu Zhengsheng, top political advisor and a senior leader of the Communist Party of China, took part in the opening ceremony of the forum. He was joined by the Chairman of Taiwan's ruling Kuomintang party Eric Chu. Yu Zhengsheng appealed at the forum, for the Chinese mainland and Taiwan to discuss a way to help the island join in with the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank initiative. The discussion may also include the Belt and Road Initiative and some economic cooperation deals, in order to develop the competitiveness of the whole Chinese economy. Over 100,000 people to be resettled in south China Almost 110-thousand people currently living in remote or poor areas in southwest China's Guangxi will be relocated this year. The regional poverty relief office says around three-quarters of these people live in very tough conditions. Another quarter are threatened by geological disasters and a fragile environment. In order to provide a better living environment for local people, more than 150 new residential communities are to be built with comprehensive service facilities. Volkswagen recalls 5,869 cars on problems with fuel pump in China German carmaker Volkswagen and its joint venture in China FAW-Volkswagen will recall almost 6,000 cars in China due to problems with fuel pumps. The recall that will start from July mainly involves imported car models such as Audi A3, Golf A7, and Golf Variant. Volkswagen will contact clients and replace the flawed parts free of charge. Putin ratifies east-route gas pipeline agreement with China Russian President Vladimir Putin has ratified a gas supply agreement with China via the so- called Eastern route. An official statement says the pipe routes include the cross-border section across the Amur River in the Russian Far East, and China's border city of Heihe. The agreement was part of a 30-year gas supply contract signed during Putin's visit to China last May. The contract will see Russia provide China with 38 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually from 2018. Mexican state in red alert after drug-related violence Local authorities in Mexico said on Saturday that the western state of Jalisco has remained on red alert after an outbreak of drug-related violence killed seven people on Friday. Mexican prosecutor Carlos Najera wrote on his Twitter account that government authorities are still alert in case of any possible emergency situation, referring to the violent outbreak. Jalisco state governor Aristoteles Sandoval said the red alert will continue throughout the weekend. At least seven people, including three soldiers and a state police officer, were killed and 19 others injured during Friday's violence in Jalisco. March for Freddie Gray Held in Baltimore Thousands of people have marched on the streets of Baltimore holding a "victory rally". These latest demonstrations come just one day after six officers involved in the arrest of a black man who died in police custody were charged by Baltimore prosecutors. The six officers have been charged of crimes ranging from assault to second degree murder in the death of Freddie Gray. Demonstrators said they needed to see justice served, not only in Baltimore but in other U.S. communities where they feel minorities are badly treated by police. Mayweather beats Pacquiao, remains undefeated American boxer Floyd Mayweather beat Filipino world champion Manny Pacquiao in the "Fight of the Century" on Saturday in the US city of Las Vegas, improving his record to 48 wins and no losses. Mayweather is guaranteed at least 120 million U.S. dollars from the title bout that had been dubbed the "Fight of the Century". He also annouced on Saturday that his last fight will be in September. Mayweather has promised that he will hit the record of 49 bouts with no losses as his retirement gift.
