A Chinese company is planning to build a cruise ship here in China, tapping booming tourist demand.
Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding is set to build a ship, the first of its kind in China, with technical support from Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri.
The construction is expected to start in 2017.
The design of the vessel will cost 1 billion U.S. dollars.
Meanwhile, parent firm China State Shipbuilding Corporation is going to set up a 4-billion-US-dollar joint venture with China Investment Corporation.
The JV will purchase the vessel with America's Carnival Cruise Lines.
By the time the liner is delivered in 2020, it's expected that 4.5 million Chinese will be taking cruise vacations.
