Police: Jakarta situation under control following bomb and gun attack
Indonesian police say the situation is now under control following a gun and bomb attack in the heart of the capital Jakarta.
Militants launched the attack on a major shopping and business district, setting off at least six bombs and triggering gun battles with police on the streets.
Police say five suspected attackers are among at least seven people killed.
The Chinese embassy says initial reports suggest no Chinese were among the casualties.
No group has said it was behind the assault but police suspect local militants linked to the so-called Islamic State.
Indonesian President Joko Widodo has condemned the attack as an "act of terror".
WHO says the Ebola epidemic is over
The World Health Organization has declared an end to the Ebola epidemic, which killed more than 11,000 people across West Africa over the course of two years.
The UN organization made the announcement in Geneva today, marking 42 days since the last new Ebola case in Liberia, the last country to still be listed as affected by the virus.
Ebola killed 4,800 people in Liberia, more than any other country.
The outbreak began in December 2013 and soon grew into a global health crisis, infecting more than 28,000 people worldwide.
France plans coalition meeting on Islamic State, says group retreating
Members of the U.S.-led coalition fighting the Islamic State group will meet in Paris next week to discuss ways to reinforce efforts against the group.
French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian has made the announcement, adding that the militants are clearly retreating in Iraq.
He says he will host his U.S., British and German counterparts to refine strategy and discuss tactics.
France was the first country to join U.S.-led air strikes in Iraq.
Since the Paris attacks in November, the country has stepped up its aerial bombing campaign against the group, including in Syria, contributing about 20 percent of total coalition strikes.
China to ensure all citizens get registered
China is removing restrictions to citizens' rights to household registration.
Under a new State Council policy, the so-called "black" population, or children born illegally under the country's family planning policy, will now have a "hukou" or household registration.
The new policy also covers other unregistered citizens including those who do not have a birth certificate, orphans adopted outside the official system and those who previously held invalid registration papers.
In China, a "hukou" is a basic right for all citizens which is linked with social welfare and other benefits.
According to 2010 national census data, China has around 13 million unregistered citizens.
Chinese fugitive hiding in Britain surrenders
A Chinese fugitive who spent almost three years hiding in Britain has returned to China and handed herself in.
Chen Yijuan, who was on a list of China's 100 most-wanted fugitives, is suspected of money laundering.
In April last year, China released the names of 100 Chinese who had fled the country. Chen is the 20th to be brought to justice.
The 45-year-old suspect is a former employee of China Mobile in the central province of Hunan. She is believed to have fled to Britain in April 2013.
China doesn't restrict forex sales to individuals: regulator
China's forex regulator has said that it does not limit foreign currency sales to individuals, amid dropping forex reserves.
The State Administration of Foreign Exchange denied earlier reports that Chinese banks put restrictions on foreign currency sales as many people are buying the US dollar.
The regulator restated the limit of 50,000 dollar per year for individuals buying foreign currency from Chinese banks.
The U.S. dollar has been appreciating against the yuan recently.
The latest onshore rate of the Chinese currency fell 0.2 percent while the offshore rate declined 0.5 percent.
HK hopes to have free trade pact with ASEAN in place within 2016
Hong Kong Chief Executive CY Leung says Hong Kong hopes to sign a free trade pact with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations economies within the year.
He says ASEAN is Hong Kong's second-largest trading partner and that the government has been negotiating with member states on the trade deal.
Leung notes that Hong Kong is negotiating with Indonesia to set up an economic and trade office in the country, the largest ASEAN member state.
$1.6 billion Powerball jackpot to be split between three winning tickets
US lottery officials say the record 1.6-billion-dollar Powerball jackpot will be split between ticket holders in three states - Tennessee, California and Florida.
Each of the three winning tickets is worth nearly 529 million dollars.
The identities of the winners are not yet known and lottery officials have not said whether anyone has come forward to claim their share of the money.
The drawing late Wednesday for the 1.6-billion-billion jackpot is the largest-ever lottery prize in North America.
