CPC publicizes violations of anti-graft code
The Communist Party of China's top discipline watchdog has named and shamed nearly 100 officials who have been found guilty of violating the Party's code of conduct in its latest disclosure.
The violations are connected to 96 different cases.
Among them have included over-the-top weddings and funerals, illegal bonuses, misuse of official vehicles and banquets paid for with public funds.
Punishments have included official warnings, demotions, expulsion from the CPC to removal from office.
While the cases are scattered across the country, Tianjin had 8 different violations on the latest list, the highest for a single region.
China's budget deficit in 2016 to reach 3 pct of GDP: analysis
An analysis note from China International Capital Corp. says China's general public budget deficit will expand in 2016.
CICC analysts expect the deficit this year to reach 2.2 trillion yuan, or about 336 billion U.S. dollars.
That represents 3 percent of the country's gross domestic product.
CICC is is one of China's largest investment banking and research services companies.
In an effort to shore up growth, China raised its deficit-to-GDP ratio to 2.3 percent for 2015 from 2.1 percent in 2014.
Beijing tops Chinese cities in spending
Beijing has retained its crown as China's biggest shopping city in 2015, as online shopping fever continued to buoy retail sales and drove more time-honored brands to open online stores.
Retail sales of consumer goods in the Chinese capital surpassed 1 trillion yuan, or about 152 billion U.S. dollars, in 2015, up 7.3 percent year on year.
It is the eighth straight year that the metropolis has led Chinese cities in terms of consumer spending.
Online sales contributed 82.6 percent of the sales.
Retail sales of consumer goods, a key indicator of consumption, rose 10.7 percent year on year in China last year, contributing over 66 percent to the country's overall GDP.
Rain, snow in south China to disrupt holiday journey home
Rain and snow will disrupt travel plans of some Chinese in southern provinces from Sunday to Tuesday as millions embark on journeys home.
In the coming three days, snow or sleet will harass passengers in parts of Henan, Hubei, Anhui and Jiangsu provinces.
Meanwhile, rain will soak Guangdong, Fujian, Jiangxi and Yunnan provinces as well as the Guangxi Region further south in the country.
China experienced the worst cold in three decades, which ended last week, before the advent of this latest round of rain and snow.
44 militants killed in Afghan raids within day: gov't
The Afghan Defense Ministry says some 44 militants have been killed during cleanup operations conducted by its security forces starting early Saturday.
A total of 27 militants were wounded and one militant was arrested by Afghan army, police and intelligence agency personnel during the operations.
The statement also confirmed the loss of three army personnel over the same period.
Afghan security forces have pressed on clearing the militants in restive provinces.
The Taliban has responded with bombings and armed attacks.
Sri Lankan Navy arrests nine Indian fishermen in local waters
The Sri Lankan Coast Guard has arrested nine Indian fishermen for illegally poaching in local waters on Sunday.
Two Indian fishing trawlers were also taken into custody when the fishermen were arrested off the Jaffna Peninsula, in the north of the island nation.
The arrest took place just a day after four Indian fishermen, released from Sri Lankan custody, were repatriated at the International Maritime Boundary Line, in the country's northern seas.
Zika represents no Olympic threat, says Rio mayor
Rio de Janeiro mayor Eduardo Paes has said the zika virus will not represent any threat for the upcoming Olympic Games.
Paes says that because the Olympic Games will take place in August during the southern hemisphere winter, there will be no disease-transmitting mosquitoes in the Brazilian city due to the low temperatures.
He adds the city council is currently working on an intense fumigation plan for the Olympic buildings, stadiums and accommodation.
Brazil is in a state of health emergency due to an outbreak of the zika virus throughout the country.
Lack of pediatricians in the time of two-child policy
Concerns are being raised in China about a lack of medical professionals as the two-child policy takes effect this year.
New figures from China's public health statistical yearbook shows the number of pediatricians in China dropped by 5-thousand over the past 5-years.
This means there are only 43 pediatricians for every 100-thousand children in China.
It's being suggested low salaries, high pressure and high risk are the main reasons behind people's reluctance to become pediatricians.
